Concours 09 Heat

I live in Florida and I recently purchased an 09 Concours. I love everything about the bike except the heat. I am struggling with the heat that is dumped on you when you are riding. The heat is not only on the right side. It travel up to your thighs on both side of the bike. If the windshield is all the way up it is even worse. Is there any way to reduce the heat. Does a slip on after market pipe, engine ice, or synthetic oil really help? Any other suggestions I might try.

i think you will see with some time the heat will subside. the heat will get better after the first 600 mile service(oil change). you are breaking the bike in with very thin oil and some friction and heat is a desired byproduct of this process. the best way to break it in is by blowing the doors off every fjr1300 you can find. frequent stops at the mons will also help take the heat off.
seriously a less restrictive exhaust and possible remapping to go along with it will reduce the heat stored up front. read this forum particularly the hot ankles thread. as the bike loosens up the heat goes away. if you have any buddies with black zx-14's let them ride it and see what they think.
by the way, welcome to the best forum on the net.

is the heat enough to make you not enjoy the bike, or are you keeping it as a winter only ride? would you recommend this bike to a friend?

YES the heat is enough that you do not enjoy the ride even if you are riding at night. I only have 300 miles on it but I am ready to trade it in on something else. I would hate to dump another 1500 into the bike and it not correct or minimize the heat. In Florida its nice to ride all year long. I can't see using this bike only for winter. If it wasn't for the heat it would be an excellent bike. I would not recommend this bike to someone who typically rides in hot climates.

Am in Louisiana, hot and humid, and the heat is a non issue for me. My Busa riding Bud also sometimes rides my C14 if I am taking the ZX14, and the heat issue has never came up. As matter of fact he loves everything about the C14. I absolutely believe you would be hard pressed to find a more rounded bike that does everything so well.

There are many theads about heat.
If you are inclined, remove the side faring panels to check the insulating foam barrier that keeps the heat from directing right to the shins. Many have reported this not installed properly at the factory. Mine was open around the hose that passes front to back. Take a wide ty-wrap (which should have been there in the first place) to keep the two flaps (right side) together around the hose. It won't be a hermetic seal, but many have found this open, pouring heat out at the oil filler when riding. There is a support bracket that holds up the foam to press against the fairing. Once you take the fairing off, you can see how it is supposed to work. My left side has not been as noticable..

The heat WILL be noticable if you hug the tank with your leg while riding. A little distance helps. Just keep moving. City traffic is not fun either, especially with any kind of jacket on in hot climates.

funny how it is an issue with some and a non issue with other riders. might have to do with the riding style/ positioning?

When I bought my Concours 14 in June I felt a lot of heat coming out of the right side. But after a couple of months and putting over 10000 miles on the bike, I noticed the heat is not an issue anymore.

I would like to thank everyone for their responses. I just purchased a complete Muzzy exhaust system with a power commander. If anyone would like to help install please let me know. I also found on Ebay a heat fix kit that has been used on FJRs that might help with the Concours. When I replace the exhaust I will install this kit and let you guys know if it helps. Thanks again.

get Kyle or Lee (SmokinZX14) to help you with the pipe and pc install. i have numbers for both guys and they both pay great attention to detail. either one of these guys will make it go smooth. you made an excellent choice with the hardware you picked. can't wait to hear it run. have them pull the flies while they are at it and hold on.

Anybody complaining about the heat take note....... I am in Arizona, Phoenix to be exact, and the heat is not an issue with PROPER RIDING PANTS!!!! If it is not an issue for us here in the hottest state in the country, it is not such a big problem for you.... WITH PROPER RIDING PANTS.......

If you wear shorts, or blue jeans, you may feel some heat tooling around town going from stoplight to stoplight...... but on the open road, even here in AZ, I have NO problem with the heat on this bike.......

I cant understand what all the conversation is about this topic...... Big bike, big motor. You will have some heat to deal with.....

If you want less heat...... and it is burning you up..... seriously, try different pants..... not heavier ones, buit pants made out of materials which allow less heat to penetrate the legs of the pants..... Proper boots help as well...

Since I ride with both.... I have no problems.... even at 110..... so you guys in Florida, please..... give me a break...

Buy a luxury-sport tourer then need protective gear to keep the "heat" off? Are you serious?

You'd probably enjoy the bike more with a real exhaust for the following reasons:

* Less heat (no matter how protected or unprotected, LESS heat)

* Bike more throttle responsive

* Much weight off the bike (factory exhaust weighs a TON)

* Bike more power

Dave the exhaust replacement is easier than changing plugs in a car. I did my 14, Mike's 14, and every litre bike I've owned, its so simple I can do it.

8 bolts on the header, a few hangers, done. And the PCIII is plug and play.....

Steve,

I wear the protective gear for the safety and well being of my body..... The fact that it helps any perceived heat issues is only a bonus!!!!

hey if you got the time, tools, and patience it is not a bad job. i just recommended some experienced fellows that could help, plus i believe he wanted the flies removed. some folks don't feel as comfortable tearing into a brand new bike as others. plus it helps if you have done it before.

Thank god the fall is here, I am riding in 60-75 deg weather, not the only fault I have with the bike is gone. She still runs like a top, but will have to agree with drew that there may be an issue with fuel motos map, on occasion, especially when the bike is hot and you are stuck at a light or decelerated for a long time there is a chance it will stall on takeoff or have a hesitation opon throttling back up. This is only sometimes, but I will NEVER regret removing those flies, what an improvement, bar NONE!!!

That stint I did with shorts in my "heat" post proved everything on my bike. I had a burn mark on my right inner calf the size of a baseball that did not go away for 2 days.. That hot ass air was coming from between the engine and the faring. Yes both sides were hot, but by far the r/s was worse, header heat dumped on my leg in addition to the rad.

I think what needs to be done is for someone who says they have no issue, and someone who says they do, to meet up and swap rides, if the heat issue is reversed then chek the bikes for differences, if not it is just different people who handle heat differently...

Reguards,
Rob

The heat issue was the final deciding factor in my decision to go with an 08 FJR instead of the Connie. I suffered through the same heat issues with my 05 FJR and just didn't want to go there again. It took Yamaha 4 years to resolve this issue but they finally got it right in 06. With all the things Kawasaki got right with this bike why they let this one slip by on a sport touring bike mystifies me. Maybee the same engineers that gave me my 06 ZX-14 with an inadequate cooling system for really hot days in traffic designed the fairing venting.
