Breaking In your new BABY Has every one read the article on "HARD BREAKING" in your new bike? curious as to what all you crazy kids think.

Here's a question no on the article.
Q. If I break in my engine your way (hard) and it blows up, siezes or generally gets fu$%ed up. Can I sue your ass. (cause I've probably voided my factory warrenty)
A. Not a Fu$%ing chance bub.
I have heard that hard break in before, but lets face it, who would be willing to do that to a brand new bike?

I believe in it and broke in my v-max hard with no issues.
Went to a dyno day with a group of v max riders and out of five stock bikes mine made 4 to 8 more hp than the others at 116 to the wheel. I got beat out by only one and that guy spent over a grand on exhaust and jetting. He pulled 118.
IMHO they are building engines differently today than they were 40 (or even 10) years ago and the break in procedure should change. If there is a flaw in the manufacturing that shows itself during hard break in that would not have come out doing an easy break in, it's likely to plague your engine over the long haul.
I don't have my C-14 ABS yet but I'm first on the list. When I get it I'm going to put the throttle to it as soon as it's warmed up. I'll let ya know how it works out.

This is another one of those arguements that will never die, like which oil is better or which bike is faster.
Break in YOUR bike as YOU see fit. If I spent $13K on a bike, I would not do anything that made me feel unsure or uncomfortable, especially if I only read about it on the internet. I feel pretty confident that Kawasaki has built these engines pretty well and I don't think anyone riding within reason will do anything substantially bad to them. I watched a video of a ZX-6 being run without oil to see how long it would take to lock up and the headers melted the plastic and it caught fire but the engine never seized. Gave me a lot more confidence in my bikes.

If you have never seen the ravages of an improperly broken in bike, you will say just run the shit out of it from brand new. And in many cases you can get away with it. In some cases where the machining is not perfect you can create hot spots and galling, One never knows the condition of a newly machined part. Giving time to wear down those machining imperfections without hot spots can be a big plus in the longevity and reliability of an engine. One can run the engine up, taking care to keep it low stress, and never run at one RPM for more than a few seconds. Doing this for the first 200 or so can really make a difference. My opinion is based on 12 years as a motorcycle mechanic, I have seen the differences with my own eyes.

I made the horrible mistake of purchasing my new car, a Subaru WRX, with 394 miles on the clock. It turns out the car was a tester.
I'm sure some of you can already see where this is going...
fast forward to 45,000 miles and I needed a new short-block. Why? While I broke the car in properly, the people who put in those 394 miles sure didn't have me in consideration.
I should have known better.
The C14 is getting broken in EXACTLY as the engineers suggested. As one engineer to another, I trust my counterparts in Japan.

Don't be afraid to run it up occasionally, just keep it low stress. and don't ever run it at one speed. Accellerate, decellerate, heat, cool, heat, cool. Really makes a difference.

I agree with most of you. Break-in should be done the way the Engineers designed it. Hard Break-in may gain you a few horsepower now,,, but I'm pretty sure my C-14 will probably still be running strong YEARS after you've melted down your pistons and valves. Best of luck to all and I hope to see you somewhere down the road.

I'm not talking about breaking it in like you stole it. I'm talking about seating the rings fully and to do that, it must be done early. If you stay under 4k for the first 600 miles, ya already missed that boat. The benefits are immidiate and long term. Better compression, more HP, less blow by, cleaner oil = a longer engine life.
This really IS a tired old subject and with this I'm done with it. I think everyone will be fine whatever they choose. just don't break it in at the drag stip or interstate (constant rpm) and this engine will probably last for ever.

I know everyone has an opinion on breakin but on my brand new VTX1800 I did the break in per the book. On my Interceptor, RC51 & CBR1000RR I did it the hard way.
The VTX1800 always burned oil and couldn't go 2000 miles without having to add some oil. The rest of the bikes never used oil. The 51 and ceptor had street duty with the 51 being sold with 39,000 miles and the ceptor with 18,500. The CBR had a ton of track days and only 6,000 when I traded it in.
My method of hard break in was within the first hour the bikes had seen atleast 85% of their max rpm range and then I would left off and let the engine braking slow you down.
