Question about starting a 14 engine that has been empty of oil for 6+ years
A friend just picked up a project 14, the po had emptied the oil and pulled all the bodywork/tank off in preparation for a big motor build, he got as far as pulling off the oil pan, radiator, and a few other minor parts before he lost interest. So he bolted the oil pan back on and thats how its sat for 6+ years. The bike ran fine before, we know him and the bike from our bike club, and we just want to put it back together stock for now so my friend can enjoy it this coming summer. I'm thinking we'll just fill it and the filter with oil, and pull the cam sensor and crank it over till the oil light goes out, then fire it up.
Anything else I should do/look for before we try that approach and fire it up?
Thanks ahead of time guys for any info

Drop the oil pan and make sure the cross over tube and its o-rings and the o-ring between the pan and case are properly installed.
Add the oil and put a new filter on and leave it loose so there's an air gap. Crank it over with the coils disconnected until the oil comes out of the filter and then tighten the filter. let the starter cool and crank it for 10-15 seconds or until the oil light goes out. Wait another 20 min and crank it again for 10-15 seconds to lube the top end.
Then fire it up... and keep the rpms varying from 1500-2500 rpms for a few min.
You should be fine.

Never really thought about it.
My only theory idea would be to warm up the whole engine somehow. And then put some very low viscosity oil in and do as you say, crank it over a few times etc to get he oil light out.
Then start it.
Once running and all sounds ok, change the oil to normal...

Take the cam cover off , squirt some oil generously over the cams, then squirt some oil in the cylinders through the sparkplug holes . Rotate the motor a couple time and the fire her up.
