Why no ABS in US? Really.

Greetings,
After just looking at the great downloads of the new '12 manuals, I was again remind that other markets get this new ZX with ABS.
Can someone tell me why this wasn't at least an option for the US market?
I know the drag strip crowd could care less about the additional weight of the system, but as I envision a large segment of the buying market will use their bike on the street, and, arguably, there may be times that ABS would possibly assist you in stopping sooner than without, and therein avoid a potential collision, why did we here in the US not have this option?

Also, and this may sound extreme, while I know the bike has just hit the street, has anyone looked at the possibility of adding the ABS system to a US bike. Sure it would be costly, but how costly? Maybe it can't be done, say, if the parts aren't available to US dealers, or maybe certain components would have to replace such that it wouldn't even be remotely rational to do the conversion. Still, might it be worth considering?

In the off-chance someone would care to suggest that perhaps my questions indicate that the new ZX isn't the right bike for me, rest assured I appreciate the concern, but nevertheless, with my stable already full of at least one bike from just about every category of motorcycle one could want (super bike, motocross, enduro, touring, etc.), and usually one with the largest displacement/greatest horsepower for that category, I will still purchase a new ZX for the new level of performance it offers.

I just would have liked to have had the option to choose ABS...

$1000 extra for something rarely used doesn’t make sense somehow.

They'd probably sell more 14s w/ABS than Yam sells Vmaxs.

ABS will be compulsory in the future. AFAIK Canada has had ABS on all the ZX14's.

Mainly down to insurance/litigation and the basic common sense - that you don't seem to have! - that ABS only cuts in when you areperformaing an action that will (would), lock the wheel(s) by braking to hard.

Might be heavier (but realistically - how much heavier?). And yeah it's more expensive.

But look at the fact that if you had it in this case: Some prick runs a light in front of you - you will hit those brakes AS HARD AND AS FAST AS YOUR INTERNAL SURVIVAL INSTINCT - will allow!

So the technology exists in two cases here:

1) You save your life. Due to the automatic braking systems cutting in.
2) You manage to stop/swerve and save any damage to the bike. Due to the automatic braking systems cutting in.

So how 'cheap' is it now?
In (maybe), 10 years you won't be riding sport bikes anymore....

Because people don't think they will have a crash! Who does?
So they save money at the start.

How many people on this forum have had a bike lock up/slide from under them/?

@Shotgun15 "...rarely used....", "Can’t remember the last time I locked up brakes...including panic stops…"...

Thankfully most people don't think like you. That's why they invented ABS!
Do you know it's fitted on cars as well?

It's called SAFETY.

"I've never hit a tree full on". "I've never ran side on into a car". "I've never had a car hit me head on". "I've never had any instance wherey i have needed to be saved form a frontal impact...".
They call the things that can save you in that 'INSTANT' of an accident - "Airbags" nowadays...

I guess you don't drive any vehicle that has ABS or Airbags?
Dems for pusay's raht?

I'm not a nascar fan, THANK DOG!!!!, but I believe there are no airbags there because you are completely strapped into your seat with a full harness, which itself is built into a complete roll-cage.

listen obba i don't give A FU@@ WHAT YOU THINK OF ME.. i have alot more common sense that you think and i know how abs works and you don't have to teach me.. i sell the cars with abs for a long long time.. are you working for insurance companies or highway safety institute? it is a good safety thing to have but as long as it is not mandatory i am not interested.. still alive and still riding for 45 years without abs.. so go preach your shit to someone else..
... And by the way I like your 1-2 definition how the abs works.. dude you must be in lala land and not reality world..

Wee I think because abs will stop cars from crashing and because of that it will be boring to NASCAR fans.. so NASCAR officials banned the abs... Lol

Are antilock brake systems (ABS) a good thing or not? A recent study concluded that ABS-equipped cars, contrary to expectations, did not have a reduced accident rate compared to cars without antilock brakes. Two possible reasons were cited: driver overconfidence and a lack of understanding of the limitations of ABS.

Neither reason is particularly surprising. Many people believe that a car equipped with antilock brakes will stop in a shorter distance than one without ABS. Not necessarily true! They also may never brake hard enough to make the ABS work.

HEY OBBA.. IT IS ALL COMES DOWN TO YOUR SKILL..

Obba, ABS not standard in Canada on the 14, thankfully. It is on the 10 and C14. Maybe it's a way to justify the crazy prices we pay!

One simply cannot make direct comparisons of the pros/cons of ABS on a car vs ABS on a motorcycle. Be mindful that if a car locks up its (front and/or rear) tyres it will just skid, where as if a motorcycle locks it's front tyre it will crash... no if's, but's or maybe's about it... it WILL crash.

Of course some people will ride their ABS equipped bikes and it will never be required/engaged - we all want that. However others may one day thank ABS for saving their lives.

Am I really seeing the words “safety”, “ABS and “airbag” on a ZX14 forum.? Maybe we should all ride 40 hp Cruisers and be “safe”…

Does anyone honestly think that the people and teams that operate elite racing classes like MotoGP, F1, NASCAR or drag cars/bikes etc don't think a lot about safety? WRONG!!!!!

Race cars generally don't have ABS or air-bags etc but they are all about going fast as SAFELY as possible.

/rant over - lets get back to drooling over our new 14R's !!!

The Busa Boys are awfully quiet of late
