Would it help anything if u did it yourself. I noticed this summer when it was 1000 degrees that my frame was too hot to touch

Someone used to make a thermal blanket for the zx12.
maybe that would help.

OMG...... flashback...... yea I shipped a bazillion of those back in the day..... I still get calls for them once in a while....
I actually have one on our zx14 race bike also. Works the same and just as good as the original ones for the zx12r.

I have a template for the zx14 one on the bike now and still have the zx12r template.

I say that all is a bunch of phooey. The amount of air rushing into that engine at open throttle would not benefit at all. I dont think I can be convinced otherwise.

Trying to convince you guys of anything is simply too much work for too little gain, I've found.

this has little to do with intercooler in this case, other than the core goal.

the engine makes alot of heat. That heat is transfered into the frame/airbox, and onto the passing air. reduce the heat transfer from engine to frame and end up with cooler air.

as to the comment of the amount of air passing through... yes and no. it certainly is enough air at WOT that it isn't exactly going to match the frame temp, but I would suggest there isn't SO much air going thru as to make heat transfer negligible. now the power gains to be had from Jim's thermal blanket... no idea if they are significant. But given how cheap the blanket is, it doesn't hurt.

Exactly, it makes the most difference in throttle response at slower speeds and city traffic type riding. You wont see any real hp gain on a dyno but you will notice a drive-ability difference.

I could make a template of the one on our zx14 race bike....

The rubber is sound deadening....

WB, thats a collector item by now... lol

" for every 10* you can lower the air temp at the intake , you gain 1% power " Smoky Yunick.

AIR we breath is made up of

Nitrogen = 78%

Oxygen = 21%

Water = 1-3%= Higher Humidty, water grains displace Oxygen

Co2= .0314%

Ozone= .000007%

Cooler air is denser = more oxygen = more power

Density Altitude, the closer you get to Sea Level or below, the Denser the Air

Hi! I would love a template! I was just about to run over to Home Depot after measuring the sides and under part of the airbox/frame so I can get the Reflectix aluminized insulation and aluminized cloth heat tape.

man o' man, does this bring back memories.

In 2000/2001, Jim was the 1st zx12 guy to post tips of his experiments for cheaply adding hp, among them the heat blanket.

Man o' man, we have come a long way, but Jim has been there for us all the way. Who would have known in 2001 that 10 years later he would have a full time biz designing & porting heads, that he'd still be a Kawasaki guy, and would still be handing out expertise to anyone who asks.

I am 110% positive I will never be able to repay Jim for all the help he has given me.

My ever-suffering 12 was a test bench for every experiment I could think of, and among those experiments was logging InputAirTemp at the Mile. I found that IAT quickly went to ambient as speed increased. Don't have the data in front of me.

Shane bought my 1427 and has my ole 10,000 line spreadsheet of all my set up /results, maybe he'll chase those numbers.
BTW: IMO Shane's carefully documented & posted development on his bike(s) follows on Jim's and Doug Meyer's type of sharing. Great stuff!

Still have the dyno run files etc from the day at Marcus Dairy during the dyno shootout.

It was a June Sunday in 2000 at Marcus Dairy in CT (several thousand bikes every Sunday)and all day the bikes were going on the dyno posting numbers.... most zx12's were mid to high 150's. There was 2 zx12's waiting to the end and they had muzzy pipes. One was tuned by Ivan from Rockland county motorcycles (Ivan's retard eliminator fame) with a Muzzy pipe. The other guy had just put the muzzy pipe on the bike. The Muzzy pipe was the only pipe available at that early stage in the zx12s life.
So I sign up right after the two bikes with the muzzy pipes on them sign up. I knew what my bike was making for hp having had about 60 dyno pulls on it on a different dyno.
The first bike with a muzzy pipe gets on and made 167 hp..... then the muzzy piped bike that was Ivan's buddy's gets on there and makes 169 hp..... 10 min later I put my stock piped bike on there and made 172.x hp. It didnt have any parts on the bike that didnt come on it from Kawasaki. Thou many were modified, they were the stock parts.
Needless to say i had to answer a lot of questions that day.

I have a thought zx12.... Would hi temp paint(black of course to match the frame color) help lower the frames temp around the area of the airbox? I mean, could one spray the paint on the underside and side of the frame surrounding the airbox section to lower temps.?

If this will work I would still use the materials used on the 12's for added heat reduction.

I dont think any painting is worth it really.

Wrapping the header works best. its worth a few hp and keeps the area around the header cooler.

I'm thinking MUCH more leveraging than airbox insulation would be cooling the gasoline in the tank to 40F or so.

This would significantly drop intake temp...

Jim??????
