I have a Cox radiator guard on my ZX-14 and love it.

Is this just for protection & if so how often or common that the rad gets damaged?

Only happens occasionally, however if it happens to you it sucks & radiators aren't cheap. On that note I don't have one & no one I know has ever holed one.

just takes one rock at the wrong time, a few members have had a rock related leak. cheap insurance to make sure you get where you are going!
