Shinkos
So, lots of guys on the big bores here in Dayton have Shinkos on them. Are those good drag tires or something? A buddy told me they're shit and what would you expect from cheap Chinese tires.
Opinions? I've never used them. I'm 6" over and lowered now so I'm curious.

I've been using Shinko tires for a few years now. They are good tires and they're not expensive. They are not "cheap" quality tires. Most racers here use them.
I have the Hook-up on my ZX14 now and it rocks. I'm 8 over and lowered. Strapped in the front. In our air (it ain't good), I pull consistant 1.46 60 ft times. I'll bet I could see low 1.40s in better air.

Shinko 003 Usoft is a great drag tire .. The 008 shinko slick is killer also .. I just got a new 003 hookup Shinko but have not been to the track to test it yet .. I can tell you this 003 hookup very super soft and much flatter across the tread than the 003 Usoft ..

In 2005 when I was racing my Z1000 there were 3 busas and they all ran Shinkos. One guy had an old Katana 1100 dialed in at 9.90.Best that day was a 10.10 on a bald Shinko.I didn't need traction,I needed a wheelie bar.LOL

Well, to say what you are going to use the tire for would help. Are you hitting the twisties, city riding, drag racing only,?
Yes, is a Michelin power one better than the reg 003 usoft? Yes it is but it's a lot more than the shinko.

The best thing about shinkos is they get better the more they wear. I've had my best results (on a u-soft) when it had cords showing. LOL

+1 to this. Once the u soft would flatten out and get bald it was a nasty tire that would hook like no other. But than it goes from the greatest hooking tire to feeling like your on ice lol

It'll be used for all 3 actually. I ride my bike a lot. I now have roadsmarts on because they were great tires for stock setup and country road riding. But since I'm changing to stretched and low, I was thinking about using a shinko, but I was planning to use it not just at the strip, but all over the place.

You need a second rear wheel.
The usoft is a good tire, but doesn't corner very well (which you probably won't notice being on a stretched bike) and it wears very fast when ridden on the street.
Get a pilot power for the street and a second wheel with either a u-soft or a hook up.

Now that's a DAMN good idea. Have a drag wheel ready to install for whenever I get busy.

That's what I did. One wheel with a street tire and sprocket, one wheel with a drag tire and sprocket. Both of mine have rotors. Makes it easy to swap out and head for the track, or ride to work all week and not have to cruise at 5000 RPM to get to work.

man... I was getting 4000+ miles out of u-softs on my bike with 16/46 gearing and racing a lot. As for spare wheels, find a used zx12 rear wheel and put a slick on it. problems solved

Chinese cheap tires your buddy says. Well let him know that most of all your tires are munufactured overseas, but all that aside. I have worked closely with WPS (distributor for shinko) and Shinko reps/engineers for nearly three years now. They have actually flew into two races to actually see their products at work and get feedback from the people such as myself and other drag racers that use the product directly. And yes they listen, that is how the hook-up tire came to be. We were seeking a tire that was able to hold very high horepower bikes to the track, but in a package that carried a lighter rotating mass/weight than that of the Shinko u-soft. That is the birth of the hook-up, a tire developed for the serious drag racer, but at an economical price. I also use Mickey Thompson and Michilin, and yes they work great, but they have never offered a direct support network to the grassroots drag racer. That says alot for the people at wps/shinko. Especially in our current economic state. WPS/Shiko still gives us (jones performance cycles) support, along with offering contigency and support to the MIR, Manufactueres Cup Races, and Thunder Valley race event. And secondly, Im not just blowing smoke because I receive support, it is a great product that I used even prior to our relationship. We won an AMA dragbike Championship on that cheap chinese tire, and made a few seven second passes along the way. Sorry for venting zx14.com, just my nature to speak the truth. And lastly, if anyone on this forum ever needs any info about use, set-up, or specs for any Shinko tire, just drop me a line, I have tested all of those tires in a real world format, on the streets and dragstrip. SHINKO, Great porducts from a great group of people. Support those that support our sport!!!!!!!!

Yep +1 on that. I always got around 4k out of the tire. And they are only like 100-110 bucks so I didn't mind having a fresh tire sitting at home waiting for me all the time...

If your going to do alot of street riding and visit the strip get the shinko stealth, same tire as the U-soft just a bit harder compound to help last a bit longer. I run the stealth at the strip every friday and 1000 street miles last season all on one tire.
