Front break light switch engages late

Got a zx-14 '09 ME.. I have noticed (pretty much since I got the bike) that the front break light switch engages a bit too late for my liking. I'd press the front break and the bike starts stopping but I have to squeeze in a bit more in order for the light switch on the front break to make a "click" sound which indicates that the break light comes on. In order to actually engage the switch I have to squeeze pretty hard but this makes stopping very clunky and probably not very safe. I see how the assembly is all put together (the lever engaging the switch that is) so I was thinking maybe I can file down the part where the lever touches a little notch on the switch but I keep thinking maybe there is another way.

Anyone know how to adjust this without doing something stupid like I was thinking?

I had the same issue, there is no adjustment. But there is an easy fix. Takes about 4 min. Remove the front brake light switch from the under side of the front brake handle perch, you will see the nipple that gets depressed in from the lever, Take some sandpaper and sand a bit off then install and check for proper brake light function, if need be sand more off untill you get it where you want it. *Dont take to much off or it will stay on all the time*

I have an easier fix. USE THE REAR BRAKE!!!!
When you depress the brake pedal, the brake light comes on. If you are using both brakes, as you should, there is no problem. That doesnt fix the issue with the bike, but it does solve the problem of not having a brake light when you are stopping.

interesting, so, your lack of a penis causes you to have an over abundance of estrogen?

Anyone else have thoughts on using the rear brake? Or have all of the REAL MEN removed them from their bikes?

BTW, you dont need brake lights on a track, or did I miss something?

Lol, I dont scare easily. I hope atidude doesnt either.
And no, I do not have MUCH time on the track. But, if that is zixxer's definition of a man...
Anyway, I have more miles on bikes than all but the oldest and hardest riding riders. I do know what works on the street. And I have known beginners (and some who just ACT like it) who swear that you NEVER use the rear brake (some say never use the front).

I like to use my front brake to flash my brake light when i need to warn all those busa's and other traffic behind me that im going to be stopping short. And before I fixed the front switch the brakes would grab before the light would come on making the bike dive a bit in the front, and that was very annoying. I just cant cant make my foot move fast enough to flash the light fast. Have you ever tried to move your foot up and down real fast? try it, its hard lol

Gotcha, I have used that technique in the past, especially when getting tailgated.
and, no, dont think my foot is that fast.
I have seen brake lights that automatically flash 5-10 times when you touch the brakes

On a more serious note. I had this problem on my Red 14 . Then I switched to CRG levers . Problem solved. The Blue 14 still has the oem levers and has that brake light delay problem.

Great mileage on the pads I usually get 10-12k on a set of EBC hh's before they're toast. Rear stock pads look like new except for road grunge at 31k+. I just hate when Harley riders like Ryno get a sport bike & think they know shit. Take a few track day schools & see if you think the same. Rear brakes are for dirt & you probably shouldn't be doing much of that on a zx-14. And yes track experience will relate to better road riding except for those who know it all already. P.S. I'd still have a dick if Ryno hadn't sucked it off.

It mostly bothers me in stop and go traffic here in Atl. The light doesn't seem to come on and it makes me nervous.. I want the person behind me to see I am stoppig cuz as most ppl here know there are some crazies out there especially in rush hour.

3000psi and falling> Yea that's what I was thinking about doing. I see your point about taking too much off though and that's why I was trying to see if there is another way around it. I think I'll also check with the $tealer (they are pretty cool guys and the bike is still under warranty) and if nothing else comes through I'll just go ahead and do what you suggested...

ryn0cer0s> Yea I do this sometimes when I feel like the person behind me is riding my ass but otherwise I try to stay away from the rear brake ... it locked up on my 650 a year ago and I went down really nice :-)

Anyway thanks for the info...

Finally got a chance to work it out. I barely took a fraction off the top. Got it filed down and it works much better now. BTW, if you go too far it's not that bad since the break switch (part number 27010) costs about $18 :-)

I used to be the same way........had never changed the rear brakes on my sportbikes, usually sold them off after several years, but before the rear brakes were ready for new..........then I started using it more at the track in an attempt at fundamental trailbraking..........using the rear brake to settle the bike as you start into the front brake during corner entry.........still deep in the learning curve on that tactic though

Traibraking is with the front brakes not the rear. Yes the rear can help settle the chasis but so can better entry technique. Beware of using the rear on the track as it will be unloaded during braking, adding rear brakes is a set up for high siding.

Here is the deal. It's called 12v sucking. The less that watt is on, the better recovery for said system. Like, it's balanced in a way. Back in the day of points and shit, got a tail light that would stick on and drain the battery as the guy rode the bike no shit!

Real men wait-wait-wait-wait and then hit the front brake no rear needed, you trail battery bumbling lever jockeys. Time your lift so you are not lever braking but crankcase air braking you fly off the seat upon lift. And if you are not crankcase braking, a battery charger purchase is in your future.

Geeeeeeeeeeee HAaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
