checking valve clearance

It's getting about time for me to be checking the valve clearance on the 14. Just wondering if it's a hassle due to the frame design going over the top of the engine. Does it make the job harder?

My friend Mike checked his at 24,000 miles.........all were still in spec's. No oil leak at valve cover and no washers. Kawasaki used some good metal on valves and seats. We were really suprised. He had a local shop this year check again........no new shims needed. new valve cover gasket, spark plugs etc........ 30,000 miles and his 2006 14 runs as strong as it did when I got mine almost 3 years ago. We roll on in 2nd gear at 60 just about every time we go for a ride.
My 2007 only has 9,000 miles, not even worried about checking them yet. This is the best Kawasaki I have ever owned in the last 35 years. Is this a fluke??????

No fluke. On a buddies '06

15,000 miles and only changed 3 to get them all exactly in the middle of spec.

35,000, checked again and nothing moved, at all.

I'm at 13,000 miles, figured I would be doing this sometime next year. If they stay in spec pretty good, might wait until next winter to do it.

This valve adjust thing is over thought by many. There is a spec not very wide of a variation from min to max and this style tends to close the gap as metal wears so you're looking for the clearance not to get below minimums. I always believe that any clearance at any point on the base circle of the cam is good after all in is in. So I bump the engine to get the min clearance around the whole base and if its in at all that is good. Mine were all real close which tells me the factory has it dialed in. This also is similar to the Busa I have talked to long time owner who claims they all report valves staying in spec without needing a shim at all.

Don't need to pull a motor mount to remove the valve cover just wiggle it a little and it comes out the right side.
