Chain Install?
Ok.. i am getting ready to install Extensions, Brake Line & Chain on the 14...
I am putting on a temporary chain to last until i receive my new chain. The temporary chain is a non O-ring chain. It is only going to be used for a maximum of 3 or 4 days with minimal riding. (to get the bike to the shop for the final chain install since i don't have a trailer) Also the shop is about 3 miles away.
Which way should the open end be facing?
Are there any tricks i can use to cut the old chain off & install the temporary one?
Should i put anything on the master link before, during, or after install?
I am just trying to figure out what i am facing before i tear into this job...
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Patrick

use a chain breaker. way way better than a grinder and punch
The open end of a master clip always oposes direction, meaning the closed end is the leading edge.
Think of it this way, the open end of the clip could catch and peel the clip off if leading, so always closed end leading.

I have lowered and stretched my 14 several times for the drag strip. I put it back stock the day after racing. It's about a 2 hour job if you know the procedure...working by yourself. That's about how long it takes me to do it, but I have done it in an hour and a half before.

To speed the process slip the master link on th new chain and use the old chain to spool. The new chain on to the front sprocket instead od removing the sprocket cover

In case you don't have a chain breaker, you can use a diegrinder with a cutoff wheel to get thru the old chain -- that's what I had to do years ago, and it worked easily enough...........68gts2 is right on with using the old chain to lace the new one onto the drive sprocket -- that's a good time saver..........and dubious is right on with the master link clip -- always install with the open end facing behind the chain's running direction.
But If you're taking the bike to a shop for install, I'd let them do it all -- that would be the easiest way to go and not down the bike to swap chains for only a few days IMO

He's trying to figure out how long he wants it, so that's why he's temporarily using the clip.

didn't mean it that way, I've spoke with him on the phone a few times and understand what he's trying to do. He's never rode a stretched 14 and makes few trips to the track. So he's wanting to see what's the best length for him.

well....
After a few curse words and 3 hours it is complete!!
I did some thinking today about the brake line issue as well.. i did not want to use the brake line that i purchased from a fellow board member mainly due to the re-usable ends. so i went to a local speed shop and got the hook up. They made me a Green coated steel braided line with black fittings for a whopping 23 bucks. I could not turn it down...
I did not shorten the temp chain yet and it is sitting at 7&1/4" over stock. There is a huge difference in handling from what i can tell right now. I am going to remove a link tomorrow and try it out again.. as of right now i am thinking 5&1/2 to 6" and i should be fine... i think the 7&1/2 is too much for me personally..
But i must say THANK YOU to everyone for the insight and advice.
it is much appreciated!!

If you're not worried about track times... Don't stretch it at all. Just slam it and put a lowered pan on (which you have to buy anyway...)
If you are worried about E/T at the dragstrip, go as long as you possibly can. If you're going to go long, you might as well go Loooooooooong lol. That being said... beware of the clip style master link. They work great... until they don't... then it gets ugly really fast. Ask me how I know lol. We ran them on everything we've ever had until I had one fail and lost a chain at about 65mph on the freeway taking out the chain guard, rear fairing, blinker, and beating the shit out of my Tiger tail.
