need air filter

I like the oem one, but its just as much as a bmc or k&n. Should I consider one of the aftermarket ones? Or just go with another oem filter?

If you have a 2006/07 get a 2008 metal air filter cover. The plastic one on my 2007

warped and leaked. Still have stock exhaust on? How is the pinging now?

I have the 08, so im good there. And yeah still pinging, ordered new plugs because the ones in there now look kinda sad and are 10,000 miles old. The air filter is worse then I thought to, Im betting all of this along with the cold dry air here is causing the pinging. And I have the r-77 dual slip on system since new with no issues tuning wise.

How much do you go to the track? If you don't go racing very much, and mostly street miles, get the street

You have "pinging" on a stock zx14 engine?

Somthing isnt right here. A stock engine should NEVER ping EVER!!! You have a problem.

I'd be glad to help you figure it out if you like.

Yeah, ive ran a amsoiil P.I. through it. I ran the hell out of it to for about 100 miles with no improvement. Ive pulled the plugs and posted pictures here one my other post, along with the old air filter witch is well used. Ive ordered a new set of plugs, and will pick an air filter off ebay tonight. Today ill finish checking the valve lash as it has about 17k on it and I have not checked them yet.

The pinging started soon as I moved here to Washington from TX, Both places are about sea level, its just much cooler here. The best fuel I can find here is 92, so im under the recomended 95 for this bike. The odd thing is the bike makes much more power than ever before is the since the pinging started. Id appreciate any help. The pinging is most noticeable when quickly rolling into and out of the throttle. If im slow on rolling into the throttle I dont here it..

does this bike have stock pistons? Did you buy it new? Has the head been milled? does it have an ignition rotor in it advancing the base timing? does it have a pipe and PC on it?
The factory doesn't recommend 95 R+M/2 for a stock bike. Its not available anyway. You shouldn't have any pinging on 89. There is a problem and its not the air filter or plugs or valve lash.

First of all make sure you are actually hearing detonation in the engine. Are you sure its mot something loose and rattling? That may sound silly but this engine is extremely resistant to detonation and it should not detonating on 91 octane fuel.

You need to get the a/f ratio checked on a dyno with a wide band o2. And check the fuel rail pressure. You may have to remove the injectors and send them out for testing and cleaning. but you are saying that its making good power so i don't suspect an injector to be plugged that bad.

Answers to these questions will help narrow it down.

Yes I bought it new, its an 08. All stock inside. Only mod is r-77 slip on exhaust and gearing. Im 100% sure im hearing spark pinging. I know the valve lash wount cure this, but it needs to be done. Ill put this togather over the next few days with adjusted valve lash, new plugs, and a clean air filter and I plan on draining all fuel and fill it up with a known good fuel. Check out this picture from a lable on my bike frame. Does this not recomend 95 fuel??

Has it done this for more than one tank full of fuel?

Notice it says RON and not R+M/2. RON is research octane number which is always quite a bit higher than the MON or motor octane number.

The pump fuels in the USA have to be marked on the pump by the RON added to the MON and divided by 2 so you get the average. You have seen these yellow stickers on the pump.

So that RON 95 is like a 91 R+M/2 number.
