Balancer shaft adjustment questions (help a noob)
I have a slight knocking sound on my 14. It comes and goes but it's in the lower rpm range 1500-3000. I did some research and believe it's the balancer shaft. I'm not sure how it's done. Will I have to remove both the lower and side fairings or just the lower to get to both adjusters? Can I do this with the bike running and using a rear stand or can I just leave it on it's kickstand?

I have changed the oil to make sure it's not going out on me and I saw what looked like a little silver dust in drain pan. I mean very little. Is that normal and ok?

My advice is that the balance shafts are probably not something that you need to adjust on your own, if at all. I would suggest finding a reputable service shop to look at it for you.
If you are convinced that you must do it, ping SmokinZX14. I believe he knows the procedure. 
As far as little aluminum dust in the pan, that is pretty normal.

Is it something that would cause the engine harm or would it be okay to let it ride like that?

is it a knocking sound or a ticking sound does it happen all the time like if you ride the bike a couple hours will it still make the noise?

It sounds like valve knocking and comes from that area. It isn't on start up and it's just random when it happens. It will just sound like valves knocking like when you start a cold car and you hear the valves knocking. It's not real loud but I notice it. Could it have anything to do with running shell rotella t 5w 40? It seems like it happened when I put on my full exhaust and power commander. Should I be using 93 octane gas?

How many miles on the bike ? how hard do you ride ?

recheck your header bolts to the head. I'm on my 2nd exhaust since stock and have the same copper gaskets..no leaks. I use 89 alot. Very few have motor problems, so look for the easy stuff. bad PC ground is a culprit. I used that reservoir bolt for pc ground only before I moved it under the seat. good luck!

I ride like a puss. I might gun it once or twice a ride. I got it used but it never had any strange sounds before. It's got about 5300 miles on it.

I think this noise crap is a big pile of shit!!
I have purchased bikes from Kawasaki for years I bought my zx14 new and now with only 6000 miles on it this noise is not normal.
And Kawi is telling people to keep riding the bike until it gets worse? come on now
And for it to be happening to a grip of other owners Kawi should do the right thing and recall the bikes and cover all expenses to fix the problem already dam honestly come on Kawi

Come over let me listen to it. Know a good engine man at the New Kaw/Honda Dealer.
On Loop 820. Or go there in Service ask for Johnny Buchanan. Been a wrench for 30 years.
I would pay him or other Tech that he has worked with for years to split the cases on my 14.
My 2007 has the "Good Times" extended Warrant ends in 2011. Hope it is just you getting use to the sounds of a "Rice Grinder" :-) sure runs Great.

Shane is the sound more like a slight tick that just barely audable and comes and goes in the lower rpm's? It just comes and goes and doesn't seem linked to rpm's at all. Yes its real because my bike has it too. Seems more noticeablwe as the oil gets some miles on it also. I am leaning towards cam chain tensioner slack. Not saying the chain is worn,just the oil pressure based tensioner. I think I am going to have my friend Brandon machine the zx12 tensioner and see if it cures this annoying shat. If it solves this issue I will see what Brandon will charge for the mod. There will be none of the proablems that others have incured with another person who offers this mod here. Kirt Frame Racing has been a quality machine shop for over 20 years and has never charged and not delivered on product or quality.

Smokin posted the 2009 ZX-14 has a different part# for the CCT then the older models??
Anyone with a 2009 have a Quiet CCT on cold start???

Well I took the bike to a dealer to listen to the noise.The tech started it took it for a ride came back and now the knocking sound that I had is beyond worse what ever was knocking is now hoping around inside the motor.Man this is crap seriously I cant believe it.I just want to push this bike off a cliff.
