nitrous 101

I'm curious about nitrous. What's the difference between wet and dry? How is it applied? Push a button and try to hang on..or a controller set at rpm shift points? Does it cut off when airshifted? How about footshifting? Nozzles are where? In the airbox or into each intake? I can't get into the bottle just hanging on the back of the bike. I've seen some put it under the seat or in the seat foam. Is it for racing mostly? post a few links for further reading if you know of some. Thanks

Wow, ok let's see if I can answer a few of those. Yes nitrous can be as simple as just pushing a button and holding on. You use a momentary switch and push it whenever you feel like it. Since you didnt specify what your going to use it for..(dragracing,or just fun) I'm going to assume dragracing. There are many ways to set-up nitrous. I'm going with a progressive controller and spray bar. Which means when the the throttle goes WOT the controller has a set time the nitrous ramps up. It's not just full spray at the hit of a button. The spray bar is a bar that goes into the airbox right above the velocity stacks and shoots straight down in the motor. Some guys spray the tubes, some spray the box....everybody has a different ideal what works best. There are a million different controllers out there that can do anything from controlling your shot every gear to ramping it up and down for track conditions. Just do your homework on those.
I'm mounting my bottle on my swing arm just because i don't want to have to keep removing it from under my catalyst seat every time I put my stock seat back on. Dyno tune has a twin bottle set-up that mounts on both side of the bike and is a clean set-up. Most of the time you will see 2 pound or 2.5 pound bottles. You can go smaller but It won't last long. Just do a search and you will find slot of info on this...

Dcjens I am a avid nos user,600hp plus, and will tell you the best advise on spray I ever got was the following statement. Pick a reputable nitrous guy and stick with him. There are a Lot a gimmic of the week parts and tuners out there,Be Afraid,Very Afaid!!! The guy I chose and have been working with if Jeff Prock at appliednitroustechnology.com.I have been working with jeff over ten years and can vouch 100 percent for him. He has been tuning for over 20 years. Just my 02 cents worth.

I am running the dynotune system that Flatout was talking about. its a twin bottle system mounted to the rear pegs. It uses a RPM window switch that you have to purchase sepearatly. I have it set to spray 7000 rpm-11000 rpm in 3rd gear on. Spray nozzles are in the ram air tubes so this system is more of a fogger system than a direct port system Flatout uses. Theres so many different ways to go with nitrious its all about you picking your poison and knowing what you want to do with it. Good luck heres a pic

Seeing your signature and those numbers and knowing you have the dynotune setup. What gains are you getting in the quarter with the 7k rpm and 3rd gear activation. And on what pill (30/40)

Its a mystery. Best thing you can do is educate yourself. These bikes love the nitrous. And will live. Things to remember, Shift well b4 rev limiter, Use high octane gas (i use 110), Check your plugs. Also change oil more frequent . I like dry nos for small shot 50 below. Wet after that. Anything under 50 i dont use a controller, over 50 i do. Ive been spraying my 06 4-ever. Current set-up is 100 wet. If your doing your nitrous yourself creep up on the tune. Its a learning experience.

wet means you are spraying fuel WITH the nitrous.
Dry you add more fuel thru your stock placement injectors (some people use bigger injectors) and a PC3 or other electronic means.
No need to stop to shift , it would respond too slow to do you any good.
A window switch or rpm based controller could save you a motor, and some skin.
Start small and work your way up. Have a stopping goal other than when the engine blows

woa! brain-freeze 101 not 301! refering to a shot...-30-40-50-100 is that cc's of nos? or HP? through a spraybar and injectors? where's a good place to read about all this? I like the sound of a controller above a certain rpm after 3rd sound even better. (I can ride a unicycle but damn!

the dynotune system that you plumb into the ram air tubes goes through the air filter and mixes nicely in the airibox to make sure that you don't get an uneven amount of nitrous to any one cylinder (as does a spray bar). I really like the feel of the dynotune system because it's a softer hit and doesn't make the bike feel like it's going to have a pentacostal siezure when you spray it lol. I've ridden bikes with a big wet shot and they try to jump naked when the spray comes on.

Those are the 12 oz bottles you can order with 20 oz bottles go to www.dynotunenitrous.com the system is 60 bucks off right now. very nice system onlything i didnt like is I wish it had stainless lines from the selenoid to the ram air tubes instead of the plastic but that can always be changed yourself.

30, 40, 50 shot is how much extra hp.

Being its a fogger system i would say cut those numbers in half, so a 50 shot i would figure to be a realistic 25hp shot now if it was a direct shot with a spraybar i think those numbers would be about 10% below so a 50 shot would be a 45hp shot. i talked to a guy at dynotune and thats how he basically explained it to me.

I run a 90 hp shot into my snowmobile...it's a HOLTZMAN system. The nozzles are regulated to 15grams per second....so bottle temps don't matter! 300psi or 1100psi, the nozzles spray 15grams per second.

15gr/sec = 3hp per GRAM.

My motor made at the crank, 163hp SAE on the dyno, and with nitrous 235hp at 9:1 air fuel ratio!!
I do this with a shaved head and layers out of the head gasket!!!

With 91 OCTANE. The thing about the snowmobile is that it pulls timing up around 11000rpm...so it's safe. I pull 2 degs with the PC for the hell of it. I run about 11 to 1 a/f.
I hold the nitrous on for over 2000 feet at a time....that's getting me up to 130mph. I race the same snowmobiles with turbos, and they let off first!!

The sled engine is basically an R1 motor....VERY similar to the 03 R1.
Fuel is injected into each cylinder via sprayers. There are 2 solenoids, and the nitrous is activated via a ZEX WOT switch....although once I got the PC3, I could have done the same with it.

For fun, I may look into a single nozzle version of this system for my ZX14....should be interesting!

Here's vid of preseason testing of the nitrous....you will be able to see the 4 fuel foggers and the 2 brass nitrous nozzles spray!
