its a motorcycle meant to be ridden doesn't matter if it is raining, snowing, or windy outside as long as it is highway not off road.

Here is the crazy idea ... maybe its the bike not my driving habits.

That is one way to look at it with a Ram Air design and all. Wonder what the sand

did tio the finish of the fairing etc??

K&N maintained correctly and a 2008 stock metal cover will cure your problems.
I bet most of the sand went by the plastic air filter cover.

The cage or housing for the filter can still pass, and filters I have pulled have had sand and shit stuck to the foam around the filter frame, that seals it in the housing.
Its a not ideal design IMO and not much you can do, as the crap caught around the filter foam on the filter frame gets knocked off as you slide it out

From the looks of the pic you took, I would pull the tank and inspection plates, and wipe down inside the airbox, paying attention not to knock any sand down the throttle bodies.

Maybe if the filter was little bit bigger than it would fit in tighter and prevent shit that passes over it's frame. But if u put grease around the filter frame wouldn't that prevent any sand from going further?

I would seal the housing to the airbox with silicone. Apply it to the plastic frame you pictured, and slide it in. tighten the crews, and wipe off the excess.

The foam around the filter itself, not much you can do but change or clean the filter often enough that a ridge of crap doesn't buildup between the filter foam edge and the plastic housing, as well as avoid dirt if possible.

I noticed this back in 2006 when I bought mine, and it really bothered me, but I got over it when I decided a turbo was good reason to aviod that problem! LOL
