picking the zx14 up friday and I have a few questions...

Talked to the PO and he has done some very tastefull mods like front and rear sprocket, steering stabilizer, speedo healer BUT has not done the butterfly mod or done any exhaust mod...

What are the first things I need to do to this bike? Is this butterfly thing for real? I have been reading through the threads and it sounds like everyone has different opinions on it....

Also the bike was bought in 07 (it's an 06) and has 15000 miles. The battery is stock. What kind of life do these stock battery's give?

As far as exhaust goes I am NOT looking for any additional power just some decent sound. What is the best sounding and best looking slip on that retains the twin exhausts look (i don't want a single sides exhaust)

Thanks...i'm getting pretty excited even though the bike is just gonna sit for at least another month until this shitty weather breaks.

Yes the btterfly thing is for real, ESPECIALLY 06-07's. All the guys that race that would know the difference in hp know that it makes a big difference! You need to get a pc before you pull them.

Removing the secondary flies is a MUST! If you want a TON of information on the ins and outs of your bike go check out the ZX14 diaries that Brock Davidson did. You can find full exhausts in the classifieds cheaper than a set of slip ons.

depends what kind of sound you want. For slip-ons (which I think are a waste of money cause they cost just as much as a full system, and have very little power gain), there are a couple different options.

For the deep burly, and a louder bike:
Two Brothers
D&D
m4

For a smoother race engine sound:
yosh (they sounded great on the bike I heard them on)
Tsukigi
area p

If I were you, I would get an orient express system. It sounded awesome, and made great power. It's build quality was second to none, and they are very reasonable at under $800 for the system.

You can't buy brocks maps. they ony come with his systems. You wouldn't want to use his map with any other system as it is made to run with his exhaust.

Brock's maps are free if you buy a new brock's pipe and free if you buy a used brock's pipe if he gives you the OK. (Its based on where you get it from) . Brock's has a nice full duel exhaust system also, and the best map support.

do i just need to buy the PCIII or the ignition module and linear sensor as well off the PC website?

I am familiar to simple tuning as I had a tuneboy on one of my triumphs and all I needed was a plug that ran from my bike to the usb port of my computer and of course the program.

Is PC that simple as well?

My plan is to buy a slip on, remove butterfly's and install PCIII with a listed map on there website.

Is this a sound plan?

Abe- for the amount it will cost you for slip-ons, you can buy a full system slightly used. If you look into the classified area of the forum(click select forum at the bottom of screen, click classified, click go) you can find a nice system for half the price! I did this very same things years ago and with the money saved, I had my pipe ceramic coated black, bought a PCIII, and it was still cheaper then a new full system(minus the PCIII). Brock is what I chose and man it is AWESOME!
Be patient if what you are looking for in the classified is not currently available, it took me about 3 weeks to find the one I wanted with the quality I demanded. Good luck! You will have a blast, plus right now is a buyers market

Just buy the pc3 USB race version. It just plugs into your stock ecu or whatever and you plug it into your laptop to load maps. The directions are straightforward and it's easy as hell.

As far as pipes go it's really up to what you like. My bike came with muzzy slip ons but I hated them. I put on a full Brock's alienhead exhaust and love it. One drawback is I'll probably be riding with earplugs soon. If your staying dual those akrapovic pipes look killer.

Can I just pull the butterfly's and keep my stock exhaust? Is the PCIII a must once I pull butterfly's?

Abe

I'd pull 'em!
On my dads blue 14 I pulled the flies while he had the stock exhaust on and he put 10,000 miles with no problems then we put slip-ons on her. She has 41k now

I would STRONGLY reccomend putting a pc if you pull the flies. It will make it too lean down low.

""As far as exhaust goes I am NOT looking for any additional power just some decent sound""...............(another opinion after 16,000 miles on this top of the line aircraft) your words suggest no extra power needed sooooo ride the thing for awhile? You own a fast bike thats docile and ferrocious, damn straight. Spend your first $$ on GEAR! helmet that fits tight, full leathers that fit snug, boots ect. Hopefully your insurance rates are in line from previous activity..Which way did you end up for gearing? up or down? -1 in the front will make your arms longer and lose your passenger. It depends how you ride it. Give yourself a thousand miles. Enjoy. After the divorce...the performance bug will be very rewarding and addicting. I pulled my flies after the first 2 weeks after joining here Buy the pc first. This easy mod nets 20 -30 HP off the top of my head. again..your arms are stretched even more..and you might fall off now. I then bought a Muzzy full system (see classifieds for MY deal!) It's not too loud and you lose 20-30 lbs of useless steel. You can order a noise reduction plug for a few db quieter. I went the other way after this ( damn addiction) and got a Brock's Alien Head... best maps made bar none... ok..Im done D

Yes keep this in mind I had a set of Akrapovic slipons on my ZX14 first and they cost me almost as much as my Alien head full system that I have now.
