How to compress spring
As I'm riding home I'm debating on how to get the old spring compressed to get off, and how to compress the new spring to get it on. The rinkie dink auto shops areound prob aren't gonna want to fool with it, but that is going to be my first option. If that falls through you guys got any suggestions? I know my local dealer won't put it on, they won't press a chain together if you have extensions! They said thy couldn't guarantee.. Stupid.

Here's a thread on this very thing that may help
www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=27&TID=51986
Or, at the top of this forum there's a link to the ZX14 service manual that would explain it in detail and they usually list tooling numbers too if that would help -- possibly aftermarket compressors that would make it easy too but i don't know whats available

Geting the whole shock assembly out is a piece of cake. It's goin to be compressing the new spring to get it low enough to start the nut that holdsthe spring down

Just called the dealer, the closest one to my house said they don't have the tools. One ab 45 min away said $50 if I brought them the shock assembly... Whoah.

I did try the hose clamp thing........and it worked great. I had gloves on and safety glasses just as a precaution. You have to use 4-5 of the 3inch size. You have to tighten each clamp a little at a time, evenly, so that they can share the load. I wouldnt use a screwdriver to tighten though. A 1/4 inch drive socket, extension, and ratchet does a safe job. When you go to loosen the clamps, do it the same way. Little at a time , evenly. You just dont want one clamp to have all of the stress where it can break. I also used pliers to hold the worm screw body on the clamps to keep it from twisting while tightening.

I am dead serious. I was a little nervous about it. By a qualty clamp like Ideal ,etc. I couldnt find a spring compressor anywhere to work. The motocross ones dont work with this type of retainer.
Just go slow and steady and it is safe. I think a better safety measure would be to put a wrap of duct tape around the assembly after the clamps are on before tightening them.
I ended up taking the Busa spring off when I had the shock done and it stayed compressed by those clamps for days. No drama when it went back on either. The clamps are still in excellent shape with no stress or damage showing anywhere. If you cant be patient and slow, DONT DO IT! (my attempt at a disclaimer)

Instead of safety glasses you needed your motorcycle hemlet on, or a football helmet! I don't know if I'm going to try this or not.. I'm not using the hose clamps I use to sell. Those things were pieces of shit...

I've been discussing this with my boss... He seems to think he can build a jig to take it off. If he does I will keep it so if anyone else runs into this problem.

The hose clamps will take the stock spring off without even straining, absolutely no worries. Just loosen the adjusting collars all the way first. It is very weak compared to the longer and much thicker Busa spring.

Were those a "constant-torque" type clamp or standard lined clamp or what? c.t. clamps handle quite a bit of load and would probably be the best option in my opinion. The ones you used got a large "valve spring" style spring on them?

I remember you mentioning that in the other thread. I couldnt find anyone around who had one that would work.
