ZX14 from Scratch
Hi All
New to the column but have been racing for years. Sold my top gas bar bike 2 years ago and bought an 2003 ZX12 which went very good for a stock motor at 9.23 @151 best. Sold that 12, bought another, a 2000 that ran pretty strong 9.35@145. read an article on here about putting a ZX14 motor into a 12 frame, so I bought a 2008 14 motor with only 225 miles on it. After some time with a tape measure, it's apparent that I don't have the fabbing skills to make a 14 motor fit a 12 frame. With quick measurements I can see that the 14 throttle bodies are a full 1" narrower than the 12. Also the 2 rear motor mounts are about an inch wider top to bottom on the 14, than the 12. Looks like major fabbing in light of my abilities. SO.... I bought a frame and I'm going to build the 14 as a strip bike only, from the ground up. Money is going to be an issue obviously.
Does anyone know if my ZX12 front end will fit on the 14 frame? How about the swingarm(already 10" over). I'm having trouble deciding if I want to put the 12 back together and sell it, or try to use some of the major components on the 14. This will be quite a project, lucky it's winter here and I have a while.....................................
Thanks in advance for any helpful input!

Th 12R has a larger pivot shaft. You might be able to do it with some custom bushings/sleeves.

Welcome!
There is a running 08 zx14 that only needs fairings and simple bolt ons
for $4,500 on craiglist (Boston)
You need to do the math and decide wether a build like the one you are attempting
is cost/time efficient even if achievable.
Times are poor and there are tons of dirt cheap bikes and parts for sale.
I don't race my 14 but have tons of oem bolt ons and spare parts,
pm me for contacts or shoot me an email to the address in my signature.
I'm in Boston... and freezing my @ss off!

The 14 only sees street duty.
You guys can always join me at TonyTrackDays in NH and NJ

Thanks Shane, I'm thinking there is probably some differences. I can see that the 14 has a different offset from the edge of the motor case mount bosses, to the drive sprocket, so I'm thinking that even if I could get the arm shimmed to fit, Id have to play with spacers to get the sprockets to line up. Probably easier to sell my 12 stuff and put the money into the 14 parts.

I hear you, I really do. The problem is that I originally purchased the 14 motor thinking I was going to put it into my 12 chasis which is already stretched and slammed with all the electronics, air shifter, and dry nitrous system. It didn't take long with a tape measure to figure out that was going to be way more of a project than was practical.
So now here I am with a 12 that will run low 9's that I have taken the top end off of to see what is inside. The guy I bought it from said it was a 1270, but it turns out to be a stock bore with a Wisco 13.5 kit and some porting by someone.(don't know who) Now I have this 14 motor, and a good frame that I just bought. Since I spent my money on these things, I don't have it to buy a bike outright. I agree, it would have been easier and more cost effective to buy a bike, but like I mentioned I was originally going to "drop" the 14 motor into the already well set up 12.
Things just don't always go as smoothly as planned. LOL

I'm sitting here this morning drinking a cup of coffee and thinking(scary I know). Maybe cost wise at this point I "could" get the 14 motor into my 12 chasis for allot less money. I'd have to make a plate from aluminum that would fit the throttle bodies of the 14, cut out the stack holes in the 12, and weld in the new plate with the 14 spacing, or possibly bolt it in, not sure how that would affect structual integrity of the frame.. The 14's top rear motor mount will line up to the 12 frame. that would leave the bottom motor mount an inch below the frame mount boss. Maybe fab a mounting plate for that but not sure because at some point I plan to make pretty good power and don't want things moving around.............................
I dunno, more coffee........................................

Thanks Guys, actually the motor I bought came with a complete wiring harness, ECU, throttle bodies, and it only has 225 miles on it. Got it off e-bay for $2300 total including shipping.
1badzx12r if I can't find the stuff locally, I'll give you a shout, thank you much!
Sgoaty That was the 12 I was talking about that the guy put the 14 motor in. He was kinda vague though about what he did with the mounts and throttle body spacing.

Good luck with the swap! I'm of absolute no help when it comes to that stuff, but there are a lot of guys her that can answer any questions you have!
Just another idea, could you buy a wrecked 14 that maybe has a cracked frame cheap? You can get a complete set of plastics for like $600.... Just brainstorming.

If it were me (which it isn't), I would sell the parts you have right now, and get a 14. Here are the reasons....
resale: You won't even get a fraction of the money out of a bastardized 12/14
headache: You are no doubt going to have a bunch of troubles getting that 14 motor into the 12r.
support: Since you don't have truely a 14 or 12r, you will be on your own for many tech problems
cost: All said and done, I be it will cost as much to put the 14 motor in your 12r chassis as it would cost to just buy a 14.

you should hit up the guys over on the dragbike zone. Entropy and a few of the others are the 12 gurus. Hell, if nothing else you might find someone that wants an extra 12 lol.

Been out of town a few days.............
Thanks for all the input guys. All of these things have gone through my mind, several times. I think I'm going to put the 12 back together, it's a nice bike, and sell it. I already have a good 14 frame, and the motor/car kit. I plan to only ride the bike on the strip which should help a little with the build. I'll keep ya posted!

Roger you said you had a broken 14 frame in one of your post. Is it wrecked or a frame recall crack? If it is repairable that could be a starting point of your build. Just a thought. I believe you would be better off building a true 14 for parts availability.
