BMC vs K&N

At nearly 19,000 miles, I'm changing my Air Filter. Is that good or bad? Just looking for thoughts and opinions. My home is on a hill with a gravel driveway, so there is some dust to consider. I don't race it but love to romp on it.

So, what to get. Stock? BMC? K&N?

Naturally, I have Brocks SMEG w/ PCIII. So mapping shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I have used K&N for 30 years. I like how long they last :-) I have the same K&N on my
96 Corvette for 10 years and 90,000 miles. Still cleans up like new.

Yea, for work I'm on the road a lot and use the 14 whenever weather permits and I don't have to carry anything. Time flew by this year and I never got around to changing the filter. I wanted to post something here for feedback. I've searched the posts and haven't seen a clear favorite between K&N and BMC, so I thought I'd throw it out there. It probably wont' make too much of a difference. I guess, like everyone else, I'd want to get the most HP without risking my engine by allowing dust inside. My wheels have a thin coat of dust by the end of the week. Actually, I clean off more dust then I do chain oil, and I do oil my chain more than once a month.
BTW, here is a pic of my Brocks pipe. I've been wanting to email them and ask if this is normal. This is what it looks like by the end of, let's say, a 500 mile week or ride. Seems excessive to me. Also, note that the Noise Reduction plug was a glossy black when I bought it. (Bummer, the pic showed chrome, didn't get what I expected). Now it's bronze in color....

K&N is known to actually lose power over the stock filter!
K&N is good for cars thought cause they got way more filter area than us to flow the right amount of air.

I have a pipercross race. It's worked for me and comes with an unconditional lifetime warranty. I like that! Also, I don't think anything could be anymore close to no filter, as you can almost see through this thing. They also have a street filter if that is more your style.

I changed my dirty O.E.M. paper filter @ 9.5K. miles. I then installed a BMC race. I've removed and banged out the debris 3 or 4 times and recently washed it out and recharged it @ 23K. BMC or K&N are very similar it's probably a toss up on which one to use.

Only if you over oil them. Bike or Auto if you use too much spray oil in cleaner kit
it traps more dirt and you lose about 2 HP. We did this test at D&D Exhaust back
in 1998 on my new ZX-9R.

Of course but when properly oiled still the stock beats the k&n.

They are both good cleanable and reusable apples to apples BMC makes a thinner one also for more flow less filtering . If you want a good long lasting filter go K&N if you want all out race get the BMC thin layer filter.

Lee I worked at D&D Performance Exhaust for many years. We had a Super Flow Eddy Current Dyno and matching Flow bench. We tried the K&N and OEM test on my ZX-9R
no Loss in HP. There are other filters that may flow more air (race filters) when you can see thru them. But for the street a K&N will NOT cost HP over stock. At lest on my ZX-9 it did
not hurt it. Not trying to be a know it all, but been there done that. 40K in a Dyno and flow bench was best on the market back then. We were a K&N dealer and Royal Purple back
then. Just saying what I saw on a new Dyno. No way I use Any filter I can see thru for a street bke that I will ride 50,000 miles.

I find that hard to believe the stock came with a metal screen that was huge most riders removed it to help flow . Basically the stock air filter is a throw away once dirty

Not being a smart ass but have you worked at shop with a expensive Dyno and really watched this being done? A new Stock throw away filter did Not make more HP then a K&N
on this test on that ZX-9R.

Yes I've seen it at my buddys shop with my 14 and it happened on my other buddies blackbird. 10hp loss on the blackbird and almost 8 hp with mine . It's not the same results with all bikes I know but I'm done with K&N.
