190/50 vs. 190/55
I've heard a lot of riders install a 55 series rear to increase the turn-in character of their bike. What about lowering the front instead? A 55 rear is 9.5mm taller than a 50 rear (190/50=95 190/55=104.5) so would lowering the front 9.5mm yield the same result?

No. Lowering the front end will decrease your turning radius.

Increasing height improves lean angle (well- gives you more of).
Same with tires profile and suspensions settings.
I would never use anything else but a 190/55 rear on my 14.

Oh yeah, good point. I was thinking of rake without considering ride height.

Isn't the 55 narrower than the 50 ?

No, the first number is the width, the second number is the sidewall height represented as a percentage of tread width, 50% or 55% of 190mm. So they're both the same width, different heights.

It comes in the wrong size and the wrong brand/ model IMHO
You don't ride twisties, you would have noticed a big improvement
with the 190/55 if you did.

I agree! I run the 190/55 and I used to drag the lower fairings with the 50 profile and and I dragged the lowers with the with the 180/55 . Haven't been able to drag the lowers with the 190/55. Seems to be the perfect tire for twisties on this bike

If you drag race the 190/55 is no good. I just ran into that problem because it rubbed my inner fender really bad.

Anyone know the equivalent gear change when switching to a 190/55 rear? It would be like going to a smaller rear sprocket, but how much smaller?

It shouldn't run Dusty. I went to Cycle Gear yesterday and compared the 190/50 Shinko to the 180/55 Michelin and they are really close in height. I'm going to the track tonight for the first time with my 180 also. Hope it doesn't rub to.

By switching to a taller rear tire, you are changing the effective rake and trail. In this case, it will steer more agressively, at the cost of some stability. I wouldn't alter the steering geometry like this without installing a damper.
In order to know the actual affect on gearing you would have to measure the two tires when installed on the rim. In this case, you will most likely be looking at the equvalent of a tooth or more.
In regards to a shorter front tire, it will also make the bike steer more quickly, for the above mentioned reasons. I am not great with math, so I can't tell you what change in the front equals what change in the rear, I'm afraid. But it is possible to calculate this with some geometry skills.

I put on a 55 rear and it was glorious in the corners. If you ride twisties a lot, I would highly recommend it.

Adam at Vortex says its similar to one tooth down on the rear, approximately 2%. Shane, what gearing and tire size do you run for LSR? What's your top speed so far?

I run a 190/50 tire. As far as gearing, it depends on the distance of the venue and what I feel the peak speed will be. I have run everything from 16/41 to 17/38. My top speed is 211.97 mph, which was obtained with 1.5 miles of track and a tailwind.

Shane wasn't u the one who put the 4 mil crank with the stock bore in?
What was most effective in getting u past the 186 limiter?
Which gear ratio was u running when u ran 211 mph?

No, my motor is stock with about 2500 miles on it. I have a speedohealier, but I will be removing it when convenient and grinding the countershaft nut, most likely. I had 17/38 on the bike...but it could have done it (and maybe a little more) with 17/39. I had to borrow the sprocket at the track.

I'm curious, Shane, why dump the SH in favor of grinding the nut?
