Vortex countershaft sprocket noisy?
I just instaled a new Ek chain and Vortex 17-43 sprockets.. I know that the stock sprocket was rubber mounted, and that the vortex sprocket is not, but the vortex countershaft sprocket is so noisy i think something is wrong.. Its adujusted by the book, i have set it loose and set it tighten and right in the middle, but no matter how much slack you adjust it for, at crusing speed the counter sprocket makes a lot of noise. It goes away under accel, and decell, Is this typical of a non rubber mounted sprocket? The wheel, chain and sprockets are all aligned properly.

This is why the OEM has the dampener material on it.

You ment a 16T front, right?
My oem 16T front doesn't seem to be noisier than the oem 17T
but my exhaust is probably louder than yours too.
Look up Shane's thread and see the part # of the 16T oem and get one.

The front sprocket without the dampner will be louder, I noticed it when I put my sprockets on as I done it before the exhaust. Its normal.
I priced a oem front and it was around $46 plus shipping... I told em to keep it and my exhaust will cover up the sound.

I bought mine with a bunch of other oem little bits and pieces- pretty sure
I paid less than $46 though.

i've runned a 16 and an 18 vortex and they both make so much noise on the road i think something was about to break .. i put my oem back on and is a happy rider again

MIne picked up a subtle whine even with the oem 16T.
It's only noticeble at low highway speeds and at low rpm.
I've gone in and checked it a couple of times- all seems o'k
and torqued to spec but the noise is definately present.
I had a 16T Vortex that never got installed after reading some of the complaints here.

I have never been a big on running a smaller front sprocket. I know chains have gotten
a lot better in last 20 years but I always used the biggest front and paid the cost for a new
longer chain for regearing to Drag race. The smaller front sprocket bends the chain more
and increases the wear. I was told many years ago that a smaller front would hurt the
Torque but this was never proved.

Louis, you are right about the smaller front sprocket- for an every day
commuter or any extensive sport touring I will strongly recommend against it.
17/43 is actually great gearing for street riding on the 14 IMHO.
I currently run 16/42 with a 190/55 rear tire (which is very similar to 16/41)
and my bike is very wheelie happy at stock wheelbase.
With a 43 or higher rear any highway riding gets annoying very quick- too busy
and noisy for my liking. I've also had a 44 rear on it but that's just too much.
Here's the 43 rear on mine

my 17/45 is about the same gearing as your 16/43 but its easier on my chain and less buzz to me ..i've tried both ..

I've actually thought about putting my 17T back in and running it with
the 44T Vortex that I have. I also have a few extra links of the stock chain.
Might be my next little project.
