Re-doing the turbo stuff on re-install
Ok, got the allen head bolt drilled out on the turbo exhaust flange this morning and the exhaust pipe and turbo off.
I am going to ceramic coat the turbo, and I'd guess just the exhaust side, inside and out. Never ceramic coated anything yet. What do you all recommend, as in the pieces:
1. main exhaust side, inside and out, does that mean I need to remove the propellar, etc
2. middle smaller junction between intake and exhaust side as well to get ceramic coated?
3. is it worth having the exhaust coated in or out?
I have a turbo blanket I plan on using when this thing goes back on, and some 22K heat shield for the backside of the scavange pump, maybe oil lines as well.
I appreciate all your suggestions and info on the other topic, about the exhaust bolt being frozen in place. Once the exhaust pipe was off, that cut off bolt came out with finger turning only!
Some pics:
turbo actuator flange spot welded so will not re-install the actuator. Have been on waste gate for a bit, now just getting rid of the stuff and tidying up on the re-install.

the stink exhaust flange, top right which had one of the the allen head bolts. I hope to modify the flange to be able to use regular studs-n-nuts on the reinstall.

Any other suggestion are appreciated. I hope to get the things out to ceramic coating early next week.

Why did you weld up the waste gate?

Kawa,
I tac welded the actuator gate/port. I am using a waste gate, and they are redundant up to 8-9 PSI. The tack keeps that 'door' shut so I can now increase the PSI in the waste gate without worry of the actuator being over powered and opening. I think the actuator gate is only good to about 8-9 PSI.
I am thinking of playing with AV gas and PSI about 14 or a little under.

dont coat the exhaust housing internally.
i'd just do the outside on the housing, same with the compressor side.
exhaust pipe do both.

So you are saying you added an external wastegate to your kit, and are no longer using the integral wastegate on turbo?

My 2nd system from ATP is at the coaters right now, getting internal and external coating done.
JDC, you can not dissaseemble the turbo cartridge without loosing all of the ball bearings, Garret likes to keep business at home, so only a few Garret dealers have the tools to rbuild or dissassemble the double ball bearing turbo.
I had to grind down the external part of the internal wastgate actuator, so the rad would clear it....

Lyle,
Thanks for that heads up on the disassembly. I was worried some things may jump out. Did you disassemble it yourself?
There appear to be many coatings around. Lyle where are you having yours done at?
Yes, the pivot arm is so close. I have about 1/8" clearance, but will grind it down a bit before I put the piece back up, minus the actuator. I had though of cutting it completely off. but decided against it for future use.
Why are you on a second ATP system?
Also, I was thinking of putting some type of exhaust gasket material, probably the sheet type you can cut, between the header and turbo, and again between the turbo and exhaust, Harry said it was not needed, so I wonder if it would really just decompose and cause leaks down the road?

The exhaust housing was already done for me at my request to ATP.
My header is being done locally, by a company called Top Gun Coatings
There are others though, swaintech and jet hot coatings also come to mind.

The reason I am on my second ATP system, delayed 4 weeks, and completely pissed off......
the 1st header with external gate did not fit. Completely incompatible with the 2ndary balancer at the front of the block. Boost tube also interfered with the exhaust pipe on #4 cylinder
New one did not fit either, I had to modify it as well.
4 week delay including shipping and coating
JDC, did your turbo have a 3" compresssor inlet for the air fliter? Mine was machined down to 2.75" and my air filter in the kit doesn't fit, in fat K&N only makes 3-4 of them with 2.75" inlet.
-I get madder by the minute with this system, and the service was very complacent and too layed back for my taste.
-Having to argue and email 20 pictures didn't help either.
Jig my ass
-The blow off valve, and regulator looked like they played hackey sack with them too.
Then he doesn't know how to fill out a simple customs paperwork form, so i paid another $200 to get HIS work corrected including shipping,
He tried to weasel out of the work because its been in a box fro a year.
On top of the aggrivation, I get pedalled with additional expenses, increased delays, poor workmanship, lazy attitude,
Then I get lip service.
Its a small world. Talk is cheap.
I would rather pay him a visit than ever talk to him again.
They sent their junk to a Canadian thinking they could shove the shit off on the little guy.
The second header was built much much better than the first, but I thought I paid $5000 for a complete, proven, fitted system.
The 1st header was none of that, and the second had to have some mods to fit the head and wastegate.

Lyle, Mine is 2 3/4 as well. Why do you say macnined down? 2 3/4" is not standard for a GT 30?

He tried to weasel out of the work because its been in a box fro a year.
In a box at his shop...? I dont understand what what has to do with your new order and the warranty that you get?
The second header was built much much better than the first, but I thought I paid $5000 for a complete, proven, fitted system.
I agree with that 100%. He used my bike to remake his jig for the header, as his first jig was lost. I feel that the header was done well. A very small grind on one tab and it went in nicely.
The 1st header was none of that, and the second had to have some mods to fit the head and wastegate.
Lyle, I recall some of the issues, and I'm sorry that the problems have continued. There is no excuse for unprofessional beharior, worksmanship or service, and especially at the prices paid for the kit. Overall I guess I have been blessed with no major issues other than the exhaust getting whacked for more $, and it being pieced together and welded rather than mandrell bent, and not the size I was told it would be. Harry said 2 1/4" would be too small an exhaust system and would choke off the power, so I'd need a 2 1/2 inch setup. He ended up putting on a 2 1/4" system. I was pissed as well X 2 for both deceptions/mistruths.
Where are you getting your ceramic coating done and did you disassemble your turbo yourself for the coating process?

What part number is the GT3071r ?
I am thinking of piecing together a homemade kit for my bike.
I thought the ATP kit used a 4" compressor housing?
Also what brand blow off valve does it use? Stu.

Compton,
good idea. Probably the most work will be fabbing up the header assembly.
I dont know the part number but the link is at top.
the overall inlet housing is about 6" dia
blow off - attached to left side airbox inlet -"Spa Turbo"
I am using a Tial waste gate and not the built in actuator

Compton, keep us posted on your set-up,pictures too!
The hardest part for me will be making the manifold.
Can't understand why these places won't sell just the manifold, some people cant afford to spend $5 G's so why not get what you can by selling parts.
