6 point vs. 12 point
12 point box wrenches work in a tight spot better than a 6 point but they don't grip the entire edge of the bolt as well as a 6 point. Seems to me the 6 point wrench would contact the flats as well as the points on the head of a bolt. Is a 12 point very likely to strip the points off of a really stuborn bolt since the points are the only part they grab onto?

Unless the bolt is corroded, not likely.

get a set of 6 point ratchet wrenches nothing i hate more than turn the bolt a tiny bit, flip the wrench over, turn it a tiny bit, repeat.....
12 point on a 12 point bolt head is way better than 6 on a 6(normal) though. kinda like comparing phillips and torx screws. torx wins hands down

I recently had a air screw that some dips#*t (not me) striped out the philips head.
I drilled out the center of the philips head with a drill that matched the minor dia, of a small torx head, then I tapped the torx head driver with a small hammer into the drill hole. It broached a torx head shape into the soft brass and I was able to remove the screw with a little effort.
BTW buy both 12 & 6 point... 6point 1st as it will not strip bolts but 12 can be much more handy in some tight places

Thanks. Yeah, looks like just about every sort of tool you can buy will come in handy or maybe even be downright necessary. Sheesh, I didn't even realize they made 12 point bolts. I thought the 12 point wrench was just to make the wrench easier to get on the 6 point bolt in situations with limited turning room.
KZ, a set of ratchetting box wrenches looks like a nice tool to own. No reason to get 12 points on those (unless you need one for a 12 point bolt). I imagine they cost a lkot more than a set of regular wrenches. They must have a different size wrench on either end though - that would help with the additional cost.

the ones i have are 12 point, but thats just what was on sale. the other end is just like a normal wrench(the open end) the boxed end is a bit bigger than the boxed end of a normal wrench, but that usually doesnt interfere with fitting them into places(every now and then). they sure come in handy!
the nuts for my APE cylinder studs are 12pt
