I use Marvel Mystery Oil. It removes all grime settlements and rust with ease and lubricates the O-rings. My last ZX-11 chain now has 26 K with very little stretch. No, this is not intended to be sole chain lubrication, only for cleaning. It's actually oil with detergent properties. Just wet tip of a cotton rag, wrap around the chain and rub back and forth and advance slowly throughout the entire chain, then clean the rear sprocket edges. A messy job indeed. I use it about every 2 K miles and every time I change rear tire, along with regular chain lube every 400 to 500 miles.

WD40 and Maxima here too.

I've been using this combo ever since my sand dune days. And if it will last int he sand it will last through anything the streets/track can throw at you.

My flow ...

1. Heat up the chain. Cleaning a cold chain is FUTILE! Give it a brisk 10 minute ride.
2. Wipe off all debris with a red shop towel or brush it off with toothbrush etc ...
3. Hold a rag under the chain, spray liberally with WD40.
4. Let sit 5 minutes.
5. THOROUGHLY wipe off all WD40. Takes me two shop towels. (Leftover WD40 eats o-rings.
6. Go for another 5 minute ride. Heat the chain up again.
7. Apply chain wax very sparingly. Two light passes on the inside of the chain, one pass outside.
8. Let the chain/wax cool/dry.

The reason why some of you see too much grit and grime when using chain wax is that you are using tooooo much. The chain wax will heat up as you ride and evenly distribute itself over the chain, in the cracks and in the o-rings. It does not take a lot of wax to get adequate coverage. if you see a buildup it's because there simply is too much applied.

the reason you do not see a buildup of WD40 is because the first run where you hit 5k rpm or more and it all spins off. Chain wax WILL cling, it's supposed to! that's what makes it a superior lubricant and also protectant.

Just to point out that step #6 also reheats the chain and spins off any extra WD40.

we keep this up and we might perfect this thing one day. doubtful, but we'll always keep posting about oil and lube, lol. that's a pretty good step by step kawa. thanks for sharing. i couldn't get the maxima to stick so i quit using it altogether. i guess i was missing the ride after wd to get it off so the maxima would stick. i guess i'll go by some more lube and try it.

It doesnt mess up the o rings. It is true that on some household general use crappy ass Tiawanese o rings will lengthen and deteriorate under prolonged or even short exposure to WD40, that is NOT true of the o rings in chains. Just so we understand something; WD40 is NOT petroleum based. It is fish oil from the scales/outer skin of fish. The same oil that coats fish scales so they can slide thru the water efficiently and does not come off in water, hence it being designated "Water Displacing" compound "#40" by the Air Force.

Clean with WD40 and lube with DuPont Teflon Multi-Use: "Safe for O-ring chains. Sprays out as a liquid, then dries to a waxy touch. Repels water and dirt." - Webbikeworld

I use the Grunge Brush to clean and it really gets in there, and then use a clean rag once over to get the muck off. The DuPont has been great, and cheap. Buy it at Lowe's for only a few dollars.

I've used Wd40 since I bought the bike new in 06 and it allows the chain to perform flawless, keeps it clean, and I'm still using stock chain/stock wheelbase....... I love it!

WD and Maxima here.
About every 400-500 miles I clean my chain with WD then I go for a quick rip to warm up the chain and fling off any excess.
When I get home, I spray on some Maxima.
13k and my chain still looks like new.
I have a 700' long gravel driveway, too.

Yup clean with WD rip and maxima.
20,000 miles, stock chain 16t sprocket. I be easy on my bike I'm figuring.
Ride in the shittiest weather. too warm to ride now.
