Look, you gotta define "big". Built like a sasquatch like me? Or you more the average build with a belly? Tall and (gasp) NOT skinny? Fill us in! BTW the biggest non custom leather pants you can get are Alpinestar stuff. They list out at size 44us (60 euro) and go for up to $350 for the Track pants like I bought. However, in reality they are aprx. equivelant to a size 40 Levi. Problem is, like all leather racing pants, they are meant for guys with smaller legs. Though the waist size I could live with, I couldnt get them past my lower thighs! Now I have to take them to a seamstress. Simple enough right? Wrong. I've literally contacted dozens of them, including the big regional outfits that specialize in leather and have other seamstress's and dry cleaners send stuff to them for serious overhaul. They wouldnt touch it because of the elastic properties built into them (1/2's excuse), and for the safety aspect of it, liability-wise (other 1/2's excuse). Getting really frustrated, and cant send them back now because the 60 day return window is up!

Jackets and Gloves? alot of options, too many to list. Go to a shop, try them on. (then order them online).

Boots? If your shoe size is past 14 youare out of luck as far as purpose built riding boots are concerned. I highly recommend Navy flight deck boots, should be able to get them from a surplus store near you. Get the high ankle ones with the extra leather over the toes. They have a great flat bottom that is perfect for pegs, with a low overall height so you can slip it under the shifter without getting your toe too low, and there ankle support is second only the support of a abs plastic reinforced riding boot. With the added benefit that every goth out there will be able to 'relate' with you when you got them on j/k. Added benefit is they last forever (16 yrs on mine, with at least 6 of those being worn all the time at work). Just do not wear tennis shoes! And boots should be well past the ankle, which is the only way to ensure they dont come off when you make impact with an immoveable object. Makes it easier on the mortician that way...

Yeah Sticks, I'm built pretty much like the dude from The Green Mile(just more mass and less muscle)LOL!!!.

Anyway, been riding with chuck-a-boots for the last two years and they felt like crap from the day I bought them. Just didn't want to sacrifice the protection. I will definitely check out the flight deck boots. Would be nice to bring the shifter back to a "Normal" position.

That's actually a full sized park bench under me. And my son next to me was 5'8" and 9yrs old at the time.

Post up some pics ghostman. Lets turn this into a 'big fat, old, and/or ugly thread'. I'm up 2 to 0 right now.

I swear I posted this earlier but try trackskinz.com for leather suits. Leather is good, size is more than large, little zipper handles suck but the price is great. Call the number and speak to Wayne. Tell him I sent you.

All,

Bates and Vanson will custom make leathers for your size...you will pay for them.

I wear a size 13-14 boot, and I think I'm going to go with Bates...they make custom sizes to fit width, arch, leg size etc - drag and fast lane boots.

Bates boots with some custom work will cost you around $300 (pay extra for > size 13 and special widths, colors) and a custom suit for race or drag will run about $1400+

Yeah I don't want to spend that kind of money slates. Too many projects going...

I already got a good leather jacket, and the new Alpinestar Track Pants. Just gotta find some idiot with a leather needle to add a 1 1/2" x 16" piece. I'll f*in do it myself if I cant find someone soon!

As far as boots, mine work just fine. And I seriously doubt Bates would even attempt a size 16 xtra wide unless I was physically there to measure and fit. And the price would be double. "Been there done that" enough times with everything else I've had to custom fit. $$$$

Sticks,

Bates carries up to a size 16 boots are $225 + $70 for non standard width. Check the boots tab and pricing. The measure after the ball of your foot, after the arch, above your ankle and at your calf. You won't find a better fitting boot. They are located in CA, but I might go have them fit me at one of the AMA Dragbike rounds.

Hmm. Never heard of Bates but thats sounding interesting now. Is the AMA coming to Pacific Raceways this year? If I don't get layed off next month (got my 60 day layoff notice, but manager is saying not to worry), I'll be seriously looking into it. Thanks! Got this thread saved now for future reference.

long-snapper....long-snapper...size isn't important...remember this for your kids and get them started early...every college needs one...think full or partial scholarship.

Sticks,

some of the greats wore Bates - Augustini, Kenny Roberts

They now have more of a drag race following and many of the AMA competitors wear Bates, including the boots. All the AMA drag races are in the mid-west or east.

Bates may attend NHRA races since some of the pro stock motorcycle guys wear their leathers...you'll have to check with them to see if they attend the rounds out west.

oh yeah, THAT Bates. I actually posted up a bunch of info about them last month. For some reason the name just didnt ring a bell until I saw there website! jeez I'm definitely working too many hours. I emailed them last month, and they said I would need to be fitted by one of them. The email reply didnt mention the NHRA races, instead they gave me there addresses in California. 1,900 mile trip for boots? lol

fitted for a jacket or pants...they have a pdf file that shows how to measure for custom fitted boots that will save you the trip...I'd feel more comfortable if they did it though.
