Pound for Pound Best Track/Street Rear Tire ??
Stock IMO: Good tread life
Borderline dangerous for aggressive street riding
Poor hook up at the track
Michelin Pilot IMO : Ok tread life
Good for aggressive street riding
Ok hook up at the track (small contact patch)
Shinko U-soft IMO: Poor tread life
Great for aggressive street riding (dry weather only)
Great hook up at the track (however, so heavy I can feel the drag on the bike).
Above is a assessment of the tire I have used in the past.
It is time to start searching for a tire as the shinko is nearly gone.
Even thou money is tight, I’m not so much concerned with tread life and cost as traction and weight.
Relative Mods: (64"WB, lower 1.25")
Rider weight: (280lb)
With all thing consider, what is the Best Tire out there.
Thanks in advance for any and all reply,
BLKICE

Michelin Power Race Soft. Sticks as good as the Shinko, 2.5 lbs. lighter. At your weight you may be able to run the Medium compound and get more life out of the tire.

i'm running a shinko 003 soft with 2000 miles on it so far and it does good on the track. i've had no problems on the street, but it's not the best handling tire.
had great luck out of the tomahawk t-3, but i was still stock, so i can't tell you how it would do with a piped bike.

I have the reg 003 shinko, and I'm 210, stretched 8 1/2" and I don't have a traction problem at the track. And hell, I run 25psi in it, no big burnout, just as it starts to smoke I roll out of it. I get ab 2000 miles out a rear, and got 6400 out of my front. Just put a michelin 2ct on it, but you can't tell how it handles after having a worn out rear shinko on the rear...

I’m not writing this to close the tread; simply to saying Thanks for your unbias assessments.

Oh yeah, right now I've got a bt021 front sport touring tire and it grips really well. I got 8,000 out of the shinko 005 advanced front but it was worn the fuck out.

the guy in post 1 is talking about hooking up at the drag strip. I run Michelin Race on the track and Michelin 2CTs and Pilot Powers on the street, believe me the compound on the Michelin RACE tires are stickier.
On hot FL roadracing tracks and using tires warmers I prefer the mediums

That seems to be the best thing to do and it is what I had planned on doing until a couple months ago. It occured to me that if you don't like the tire, it is better to have only replaced the rear and save half the price of a front/rear set. You don't get to ride on two tires with equal wear or traction characteristics but you save money for experimenting with other tires. At some point, you will have to change both but my thinking is why do that if you don't know you'll really love the tire.
BTW, Avon Storms seemed to be a popular tire on the old forum. Any opinions here?

A little off-topic but worth saying: when my 14 was in the workshop having it's frame checked I borrowed the 14 demonstrator for a couple of hours to go home on. When I got back on my own bike again I couldn't believe what a pig it was to steer, a huge difference compared to the demo' bike. The reason was the OE Bridgestone front on my bike, still legal with plenty of tread, had worn on the shoulders of the tread and lost its profile. New rubber on the front and all fixed. It creeps up on you and you don't realize how bad it is until you hop on another bike.

I ran Avon Storms all last season. (Mar 08-Feb 09) Loved them. Wear very well, 14,000km out of this set, 1/2 still left on front. Great rain/wet weather tire. This is important to me living on Vancouver Island in the NW. Have a new set on order which should be in this week. Never any complaints about traction or "hooking up". Don't drag race but do a lot of long distance touring and appreciate the good wear qualities.

Change both tires at the same time???? SSHHHIITTTT.... I don't ride long diststances, just 10-50 miles and at the track. I went through 6 back tires to one front... Now that would have cost me around $700 thrown away... Pretty pointless to me to take a perfectly good tire off. BUT, that's just my opinion. Not worth much more than $.02

i ride on the road and don't do stationary burnouts until the tire is toast so changing both to get even handling characteristics makes sense. both the front tires i replaced had lots of tread but they were still worn and were not optimal. the 14 is a hyperbike that needs all the traction and handling new tires provide. you don't realize how bad they are until you change them out and wonder why you didn't sooner. if it saves your ass just one time it is a small price to pay. you won't believe the handling with a brand new set of pilot power 2cts!

Best street tire for the 14 I've found in three near four sets is Michelin. I love the combination of a front Pilot Power 2 CT and rear Pilot Road 2. Good pairing for even wear and they stick very well. A Pilot Power or Pilot Race would hook better on the rear for drag racers but last virtually no time on the street.

I rode with a dude last season who told me he had a tire with a hard center for highway riding durability and softer sides for cornering. Sounds like a great idea for a tire to cover all bases. Any idea what the name of tire is and opinions of quality/performance?

Smokehouse,
I had Metzler M-1's on my ZX12 and loved them. Let me know how the M-3's are because I think I'm going to replace my tires with M-3's before the summer riding season.
Thanks,

I ran the Storms, not my choice for the street. Good touring tire but not for an aggressive street rider due to low tack.

I love my BTO-16's but the rear is wearing faster that I would have thought but still much longer wear that the stock BTO-14. The 16's seem to allow much quicker and easier turning.
