Track Prep'n a ZX-14.

Hi there gang,

So I'm gonna take the Zx-14 (09) to the track at Arroya Seco. it's not a drag track, it's one with twisties. (Drag will come later).

Some prepwork i was told I needed ...

1. Tape the headlights with blue painter tape.
2. Pull the fuse for the headlights.
3. Safety wire the oil filter.
4. Safety wire the drain plug.
5. Pull the mirrors.

My questions ...

2. Where is the fuse for the ehadlights?
3. I got a K&N filter with hole, but where to anchor to?
4. Where can I buy / How can I drill the hole?
5. who makes good mirror block off plates? the 15.00 ones of eBay?

thx.

As for the oil filter, I have seen folks put a worm gear clamp around them and saftey wire the clamp itself. I don't know if it's legal or not though. The fuses for the headlights are under the seat, at the tail of the bike.

You'll need to tape off all your lens.
Fuses are under seat. Pull head, tail & brake fuses.
I just bought plates from one of the internet sites. You can get by with bolts and washers. I ran nothing my 1st track day.
I marked my drain plug with a felt pen in a straight line with the tab on the case that protects it.
Pulled the plug drilled it and the "tab" so they would line up when the plug was tight. ( thats why I marked it )
Now I can safety wire both my plug and oil filter with one strand of wire using a hose clamp. You can go to your K&N.

Plan on your suspension being way too soft.
My stock stuff became junk quickly. (About 3rd track day w/4500 miles showing)
Bring a gas can and keep your tank around 1 bar. A full tank dont help AT ALL!!!
Plan on scrapping your pegs, kickstand and lower fairings.
I pulled my lowers and used big and tiny zip ties to hold my mid fairings in place so they couldnt fold in the 185 mph wind. Fact is, I never put them back on.
I also scrapped the tube between header and can on my Tsukigi.
Ground on the bottom of the oil sight glass and ground the hose clamp nearly off
the water pump.
Did a fair job of taking most of the toe guards off my boots while using them for feelers .
The faster you go the more you have to hang off to keeps these pigs from touching down too hard. Touch down too hard and you lose FRONT grip. Least thats my experience. Kinda fun in a sick way.
The nice thing about these long bikes is you can do some fantastic powerslides on exits!!
The bad thing is gixxer 750's and triumph 675's will drive you nutz in the corners. 1000's seem to deal with the same laws of physics we do. And 600's outbrake 14's to death but cant motor away on exit. those two scooters with good riders out brake in, hold more speed through and seem to have enough torque to hold that advantage finishing the corners. I'd get them on a long straight but not in short ones.
IF this is your first track day I got some other advice if you want.
Enjoy it and ride at your own pace. Aint no trophys or pretty girls for the winnar.

OH YEA 1 more thing. It scares me to think how....., ah...., exciting things could get with the flies still in. I hope yours are out. I know the stock "hit" on my 06 would be rather "exciting" on high speed sweepers!!! I like spinning the back tire leaned over. But I like to decide how much and WHEN!

+1

WAY soft no matter what you do or how meticulous you try to overcome the suspension settings.

Be careful 1st lap out. Sticks bought an aftermarket rear shock, I would've had I kept mine (plus had my fronts resprung and revalved by GMD CompuTrac or such). You'll probably realize why then you hit T1 of whatever track you're riding, but expect that to be the weakest link of the bike regarding performance.

Be careful and have fun out there, hopefully you'll post up some pics. Some folks from the "other" forum complained our 14 threads focus on straight lines only.

Thanks for the advice.

i plan on having a buddy drill the drain plug, he mentioned to mark it too.
I bought a K&N filter which has a 17mm nut on the end with a hole pre drilled.

Do the lowers really drag that bad? I suck at leaning in the corners so i'll have to play it by ear. I also have buell XB12 pegs on my bike so they'll touch first before anything i think.

Flies are out, was the first mod done. I'm alos putting on my scratched up M10 can in place of my carbon fiber oval. just in case.

Pull the brake light fuses too? No warnings for the guys in back that I'm a squid? lol.

Yes pull brake light fuses too. Tape or remove all lights from the bike including rear. I'm surprised your track doesn't require you to change radiator fluid to water-wetter or such.

Squidish doesn't matter to anyone out there as long as you hold your own line. If you feel more comfortable with everyone knowing your a track newb, its customary to tape a big X on the back of your track leathers.

Get ready to be addicted. I'm never the fastest guy in the race or anywhere close, but its addicting. Take some race schools and get your CCS license to get the most out of it and have access to the fast tracks (like in FL we do Daytona Speedway and Homestead -Miami International).

Heads up, when dragging a knee all the way around a long turn the bills aren't on your mind, sky gets bluer, grass gets greener, your lady has never b*tched and the whole world is a nicer place to be.
