Pipercross air filters...

Did I make a mistake getting one of these for the 08 ? For general purpose street riding it looks very open and free flowing , hopeing it filters good enough to keep crap out of the engine.

I also picked up a BMC race filter. I've been told on good authority that they are fine for street use even though you can see through it and it has a "for track use only" statement on the package. Apparently, the BMC relies not on the mesh alone, but an oil film to trap particles. You are supposed to lightly re-oil it with a special spray occassionally. I imagine using the Pipercross is similar.

I know masszx-14 has used a BMC race filter for some time on the street. He'd be a good one to PM on this topic.

To teil you the truth, I don't think I'll have mine in all the time because I am a bit leary of what might get in there on a long trip where you might hit a dusty construction zone, etc..

I was looking to get an air filter for mine because i removed my secondary throttle plates today, and saw that my stock air filter was pretty dirty.

I was leaning towards the pipecross because it sounds like it would filter out the most crap

But to be honest, i have no idea which is best.

I've heard BMC flows best. IMO, the best thing to do is read enough opinions and go with the same brand the guy uses who sounds like he knows what he's talking about most. That's what I did. (BTW, anybody know where BnB is these days??)

I had 6000 miles on my air filter. It had a visable web of dandelion fuzz on it and some soot in the folds of paper but everyone told me it was nowhere near in need of replacement. I did it anyway for fun. Can't wait to try it. 70-80$ - 1-2 hp - it's cost effective -- what the hey.

I bought the Pipercross street version, didn`t know there was a race version also. General concensous on past threads is usually go BMC. But I guess I am looking for a little bit more filtering than air flow capacity, still the Pipercross Street looks very open. Can`t imagine how open the BMC or Pipercross race versions must look like, those can`t be good for the motor on the street.

My BMC race filter looks like two layers of screen from a storm door. The screen is acordian bent like the stock paper filter. Hope that oil seal catches a lot of stuff. It looks almost the same as no filter.

Perhaps I will do some kind of test to determine what gets past the BMC race filter. Maybe see if I can rig up a secondary filter under the race. That would inhibit suction flow from the motor but I believe the air ram effect is a lot stronger than any motor suction that is present. Seems like a secondary filter would be a fairly accurate test. I just don't think I want to ride around like that for ever - why use a race filter if you're going to restrict it?

Schnitz racing has some dyno graphs on different filters so check it out. If you are not dragracing or dont need every single fraction of horsepower, dont buy a race filter.

I finally drug myself in here kicking and screaming lol. Actually I've just been busy, and was checking the old site on occasion, just to see if it had 9 lives and was gonna pop back up from the dead again. I think its gone for good tho I guess for Steve it wasn't "economically viable" to keep it up any more. I sure wish he woulda gave us some warning tho Somebody oughta contact him about the site database...at least we could retrieve the info? Just aint cool letting 3 years of peoples hearts and souls sit dead on a server somewhere. Prolly wiped the drives clean anyways I imagine for the next project
It looks like were all newbies now tho don't it? lol
