Carbon Fiber
Is there any real benefit for having a carbon fiber exhaust other than sheer appearance? I read on the Brock site that these cans are "NOT recommended for excessive high speed use or repeated dyno runs". Does that mean these cans are not as good as say Ti cans? Oh, and lastly, do they cool faster than Ti flavored pipes? Thanks for your insight amigos!

no fiber will hold up to a metal in strength and durability. all I run are carbon fiber exhausts on my bikes. as compared to other parts on a bike, fiber is a fraction of the weight.
my Brocks Gen3 caught hell for a year and a half on my ZX14, was so light it was hard to tell you were holding anything in your hand, and was like brand new when I sold the bike.

Tax season is coming! I think I'm gonna opt for the Carbon Flavored Shorty Gen 3 on my black and orange scooter... I didn't even want to give it a chance despite liking the look of the set-up. I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it!

they're nice to have, but fulltilt has a full CF ZX-12R (like everything is CF) and now his wheels wont hold air as the resin has broken down.

Another benefit of carbon fiber is it seems to be more damage resistant.
The carbon can on my track bike(600) took all a nasty flipping skidding 120 highside could give it. A little grinding damage from the last 50' of sliding but thats it.
The stainless Tsukigi can on my 14 would have looked like a squashed and ran over pop can.

If that is the case then what's to say it was the carbon fiber and just not a manufacturer’s defect?

If you have little ones, or even park your bike with kids around it is a big benefit to have the CF…
You don’t need to spend all that time scraping there skin off your muffler.

HA HA! Nope, no kids, but still nice to not have to worry so much about the ladies getting a "bike badge" on the way down from the passenger seat.

There isn't a thin layer under the layer of carbon fiber? For some reason I was thinking the carbon fiber was just the outer shell...

Not all carbon fiber mufflers are created equal. We utilize 100% pure carbon fiber material with a very high temp resin. They are packed carefully by hand with Silent Sport Premium from Germany that has a burn rate of almost 1500 F. Along with a 2000 F. bonding agent between the end caps. No limitations running at high speed or on the dyno. I believe we went over 230 at El Mirage on John Noonan's Yellow Submarine Busa with our production carbon fiber muffler a few years ago. That's a fairly high speed run. Carbon fiber can remain very cool to the touch and/or cool down very quickly. A Ti muffler in most cases seems to cool down very quickly. Maybe even quicker than carbon fiber.
Durability wise when comparing Ti to CF, it can depend on the grade of either and/or wall thickness. Packing material can and does make a huge difference, as well as assembly technique. Our carbon fiber is as durable as Ti provided it is properly taken care of. We find Ti can become brittle over really hot and repeated heat cycling. Once again, depending on the wall thickness. For the best heat protection, we utilize Inconel. But mostly on race car header applications or limited cooling muffler locations.
Weight depends on wall thickness. For example with ours - stainless steel shell is 28 oz. Ti shell is 17 oz. CF shell is 12 oz.
Though of course opinions vary between manufactures, I have never found a reason to limit use of carbon fiber mufflers over high speed operation and/or dyno runs when you offer a quality and tested product.

Nice explanation Kerry. Its good to hear some info from a pipe builder I favor TI myself.....but its good to know CF can be a good alternative when done right
