2008 CAM COVER LEAK

Ok I have my new Cam cover gasket for my 08 zx14. Mine has been leaking for about 1000 miles and has gotten very bad on the left side. Its under warranty but im doing this myself. If anyone has any tips for me before i get started I would appreciate them. I will take photos of this and do a write up if there is anyone who would like it.

I need any torque specs on this repair to...

Torque spec is 9.8 N-m (1.0 kgf-m, 87 in-lb) Stress how you need to keep the rubber and metal contacts ultra dry. You squeeze oil, it will rise or say cause the seal to weep oil/sweat oil but not pour out say. You wanna tack the corners and centers so when you move the cover over the head, the new gasket doesn't drop or roll out or twist where you didn't catch that squeeze of a leak. Use something like yamabond or the gray type none drying hondabond. Both are basically the same.

I've got an 06 not sure there is any difference. Seems to me and others that the gasket is not squeezed enough. Got some washers to put under the bolt head and that stopped the leaking so far anyway. Lot of crap to remove to access the valve cover.

The Head Cover bolt torque is 9.8Nm or 87 inch/lbs
I believe you are supposed to use Kawasaki Bond Silicone Sealant under the gasket.

Don't just tighten the bolts down to stop a leak, you will damage the head - very expensive.
Do it right.

Yes. Start from the center out is the sequence so you buckle the cover from the middle out, not from the out going in. Going in, you up the center is buckle the load that way is leaks either way. Dry-Dry-Dry is key!
Use a bar not a clicker type torque wrench. Maybe Sears has a bar type, inch pound wrench. If you did this for a living, you can use a T-Handle and torque everything down by hand say. It takes awhile to feel that 6mm thread tear out of your hands is when you know hand tight is enough.
That cover is buckling in the heat, grows when warm; is under crank pressure thru the cam chain side. Lots of flex to get a good seal.

"Don't just tighten the bolts down to stop a leak, you will damage the head - very expensive.
Do it right." I ment should i use washers when when I re assemble it? I am wondering why this happend in the first place, are the bolts bottoming out? Were the bolts not tight enough from the factory? I just want to get it right and correct the problem so i dont have to do it again in 5000 miles.

And is Kawasaki Bond Silicone Sealant any deferent than rtv silicone?

"take it to the dealer is under warranty IMO" Not gonna happen. My bike looks nicer than new and im gonna keep it that way. And most of all I dont trust a under paid mechanic to treat my bike with kid gloves and do a quality job and on a machine that I will take to 180mph. Its how I have always done it. Im sure there are good shops around still, but not around here.

Ok i have it all apart, it does look as if the cover bolts can not clamp the gastet down, the bolts are all the way down and they just barely but any force on the gaskit. Its so loose I can move the gaskit around with my finger. It is not by any means ever gonna seal for long like that even with the new gaskit. Im gonna go to the stealership and get 46.00 dollers worth of spark plugs as i have 7500 miles on the bike now so I should do it now while its apart. And how does anyone fit a torque wrench on the middle cam cover bolts?? Its all i can do to get a tiny wrench on them..

Put thin washers on every bolt to make it even...same thickness washers everywhere. You can kinda just make them snug - I think TQ wrenches are for engine heads and internals :-)

When parked there is a puddle of oil that keeps the gasket wet at the front left....the direction of the lean while on the kickstand.

Yes it is mainly leaking in that corner. I put m10 washers on all 6 bolts. I was able to get my smaller torque wrench on all but the middle back one. It seems to be leak free I have putted around a few miles, and let it sit on its kickstand for a few hours and it looks dry as can be. I changed the plugs to, but I dont think it needed done. My manual says to replace them at 7500. I have just over that on my bike now. The old ones look about new and were all .040 gap. I think I could have gottin 10k+ out of them.

Success! I can say that just putting washers on without replacing the gaskit will fix this problem! Thats great because it saves anyone from having to remove the cover which would take much longer.

This was after 6 hours off sitting on the kickstand and several heat cycles. No sign of leaking Photobucketaking.
