1/4 Mile Newbie

I was thinking about looking for a track somewhere in Oklahoma this spring to try my hand at some 1/4 mile fun. I thought I would just try some test & tunes.

My bike is bone stock except for a fender eliminator. I thoght I'd try leaving it stock until I got my feet wet.

I was just wondering if you guys had any advice for a complete newbie. I was planning on trying to call Thunder Valley, since it's the closest track to the house, and see what would be required as far as safety gear, kill switch, etc....

Welcome, I'll start the ball rolling then. Remove the secondary butterflys and liberate all that low-down power. It makes a big difference. If you are running quarters my advice is to wear full leathers and boots, even if local rules allow jeans and trainers.

Just go out and have fun is the most important advise. If you've never done it before, watch a few guys and learn how to properly stage your bike at the lights. Start off launching from the line like your taking off fast at a stop light. From there as you get comfortable push yourself to take off more agressive. Don't do like the new Harley riders and hold it wide open and let the clutch fly. That could end very badly.

Get a strap and lowering bars.
It will make you faster and easier to ride.
Maybe a little safer, because it won't wheelie as easy.

stop into dragbike zone and post this up in there... There are quite a few guys that run at Thunder valley that could probably let you know the ins and outs of that track. There are lots of tracks in oklahoma and texas to run at, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a good one. If you don't have the money to drop on a set of leathers right now and want to get some runs in, you could always look for an 1/8th mile track in your area and get your feet wet there. I really like 1/8th mile because it showcases the rider more and running a bike with just lowering links and a strap I need it to be about who is the better rider more than who has the most money in their bike.

What part of Oklahoma are you from? I've got family in Antlers, Tulsa, Elk City, Chickasha, and OKC.

Here is an article that may help you with some of what to expect at the track - it is written around running a VRod - but I believe almost everything is generic enough to apply....

One of my most traumatic memories is getting attacked by geese at the lake in elk city next to the wall with the bronco on it. LOL.

I'm afraid if the oilfield doesn't pick up again we'll be eating those geese out of the park

We had 2 new harley riders come to the track last year on brand new 1200 sportsters. 1 was bragging about how fast it was. He never got out of the 8's, 1/8 mile. Both would stage at the line and hold it wide open on the limiter and let the clutch fly. I don't know how neither one flipped over?? They were straight up in the air at the line. The second guy learned his lesson and toned it down. They braggar almost got thrown off the track because he wouldn't stop launching that way. Never did see either one again.

They've probably seen someone with a two step launch and thought that they were taking off on the limiter lol. There's a guy in my shop that thinks his 1200 is fast, so I make it a point to leave out at the same time as him everyday and try to get him to play. For some reason he won't do it?! Either that or he is and I just can't tell.
