putting on new chain

installed my extensions braided rear line and speedohealer...... popped old chain off with my motion pro chain tool and put on new chain....took a link out and pressed on master link.... started pressing/mushrooming pins in master link and when i got to last one, pow! one of the damn pins on the master link splintered at the hollow end right by tip.

i got 2 new master links on the way now, i know aot of you do this often chaging wheelbases etc, what is the EASIEST way to mushroom the heads on the pins of the new master link? do i have to use that tool? and how much am i looking to spread them out???

Id say get the tool. I just did mine for the first time and with a good chain tool its easy to do. I got the motion pro kit, which was less than $100 and well worth it. It comes with a special tip to mushroom the pins.

i have the motion pro kit, i didnt have this much trouble spreading the pins on my other chain, i had to put a cheater bar on the t-handle just to get some leverage and it broke the tip of the pin (that u have to spread) on the masterlink.... how do u know when u have it spread/mushroomed enough????

Never had that happen to me, Maybe it was a faulty link? Maybe you were not centered properly? I have had good luck with the motion pro tool,Good investment.

If your using the riviter tip you can only conpress it a little bit less than 1/8th of an inch. And then the pin will be flush with the shelve part on the riviter tip. Its kind of hard to explain, but if your using the right tip it should be self explanitory. Your not using the same tip that you pushed the old chain apart with are you?

so the one i should be using is a tip instead of the long pin type thing? i have 2 tips and like 4 pins.... i was using the bigger of the long pins to spread it.

The biggest pin in the kit is the riveter, it is the only one with a little nipple on the end of it. Do you have that one? There should be 4 long pins one for a 520, 525, and 530 chain, and then the largest one with the nipple is the riveter. Hope that helps.

Yes, some rivet links will shatter at the ends. It depends on the chain as some are extremely hard and should be flared somewhere between .010-.020 of an inch. Like I said, it depends on the chain. My EK chain did it on 2 links so I setttled for a .014 flare.

well luckily i was using the right one (riveter)....i didnt have any instructions with mine and have never used it before exept to install chain on my stretched zx9 2 years ago.

kawajockey- yea it seems the chain i got is very hard. the D.I.D. for my zx9 and the stocker for my 14 was actually very easy to spread.... i have a ek zvx530 quadra ring gold chain..... came with extension package deal from schnitz. i notcied the chain felt beeffier compared to my d.i.d. and was a absolute b!tch to take a link out. i shattered the 530 pin trying to do so and had to fab a new pin out of an old titanium extractor....
