Bike to bike communication?

Hey Ive wanted to get a chatterbox or simillar device so I could talk to my friend when we ride. I dont need a lot of range since we are always within 100ft of each other. Ive looked at the chatterbox, but it seems to be really bulky and dont want to mount that big ole think to the side of my helmet. I also found this that uses blue tooth to conect to each other. Has anyone here used a sytem like this. http://www.intercomsonline.com/BlueAnt-Bluetooth-Motorcycle-Intercom-p/093747.htm

thanks for any input

We've used the Chatterbox GMRSX1 for a few years now. Here's my experience with them.

Yes, it is bulky on the helmet, but when it's on, I really don't notice it when moving my head around. I've seen the little wireless one. I love their size, but I'm not sure I'd reach for it. (any opinions out there?). The reason being that I really like the push-to-talk (PTT) switch. The voice activated device sucks over 50 mph. Or it could be that my Arai and AGV helmets are too loud. My wife has the Shoei RF-1000 helmet and I can hear her cute litle voice crystal clear, she says I'm loud and noisy.

We only use them on longer trips because of the time it takes to setup before pulling out of the garage. But when you're on an all-day drive, they're nice to have and we don't leave without them.

As stated earlier, with the PTT button we can have a decent conversation all day. And with the GMRSX1 model, we have more channels that provide privacy and less annoyences from the butt heads pushing their tone buttons. (the older FRS models only have channels 1&2).

They also communicate with other hand held radios. That's cool, because I can talk to my wife if she's in her Jeep and I'm on the bike. We normally take off each day at the same time, so we chat as we're on our way to our individual destinations. (Spokane isn't that big and there's only one freeway). It's also cool when we're meeting family and friends at a camp site. They just tune in to our channel and listen for us.

Lastly, I can hook up my cell phone and IPOD to it. I work on the road all day and use the bike whenever it's dry and I don't need to carry anything big. I take calls all day on it. It's great for my longer trips of 1 to 2 hours.

They suck. Let me give the single biggest reason why ....

"Excellent performance at speeds of up to 130 Km/h" that's only 83 mph.

Keep in mind that the diminishing return of the sound quality starts at roughly 60mph. At 85 mph on the freeway it's FAR from "excellent" this is of course Rider to Rider communication at ranges less than 2 feet, go dhelp it for bike-To-Bike at the claimed 400 feet.

BMW Makes a really nice setup that works with the Motorola handhelds. I've been on a few rides where bikes have been 4+ miles apart and it sounds like yer 10 feet apart. I'll get the skinny from those owners.

I have a full autocomm system I might be selling ... was thinking of ebay .. but rather to someone I cn keep in touch with.

i bought the Starcom and I don't like it as much ... byut it's fully fitted into the bike and for the small difference I'll keep it there...

PM me if it is the way you want to go ... It does Kenwood radios and I can GARENTEE !!! it will let you talk to the limits of the bike .. 300 KPH and can talk normally .. ( well maybe you can lol ) mostly we hear giggles..

as for the GF .. never leave home without hooking up .. could not imagine NOT talking to fellow riders or my lady .. might as well be alone..

stereo sound has deep bass ( unlike the starcom ) and it hooks up to the radar/Zumo AND my phone.. PTT or Vox and 3 mile radio chatter...

I have radio .. unit .. cables .. and headsets x2 complete bike kit and bike powered, PTT cable and kenwood radio connections.

PM me

I've never used the Chatterbox 2-up, only rider to rider. Highway speeds, realistically for me, are 65 to 90. Never had any drop in performance. We've had clear communication up to 3 miles apart before any degradation in signal. (we tested it for that purpose). We've also had 4 riders at a time and it worked fine. Again, this is at somewhat legal speeds.

I've also never used them at triple digit speeds. The only reason I would need to is if I had spotters out there, otherwise, I'm not chatting with anyone at a 120+ mph. Now, I'm sure that everyone has their own experiences to share, but I haven't had too many bad experiences other than the voice recognition problems I mentioned earlier. I do use the voice recognition around town as too much going on around traffic to use the PTT button. Otherwise, it works okay.

The mounts need to be tight and snug or they will start to move around after a few hours.

Autocom guarantees clear communication at 150+ MPH. Honestly though, if you are rolling at those speeds you need to shut the fuck up and pay attention to the road.

I have talked to a passenger @ 300 KPH .. mostly to ask how their shorts were doing ...

crystal clear .. no yelling .. hear every sylible... these things rock .. ANYTHING else and your just kidding yourself for usability ..

even with a lady on a pleasure cruise .. the Rocky mountains are best ejoyed at 160-220KPH or so .. large and sweeping roads .

To be precise, Autocom is not a bike-to-bike system but can be extended with a radio of some sort to make the trick. I'm using a simple setup with Autocom headset connected directly to my PMR radio (I'm not sure what kind of radio systems you have over there) and a push-to-talk button close to my left thumb. The expensive Autocom unit isn't needed unless you want to connect other gadgets also. The Y cord (one branch going to the headset, the other to the PTT button and the third one to the radio) was custom made. Haven't tried if the unit would make any difference in terms of audio quality. Get a decent radio set and avoid the cheap ones.

I've pretty much made a decision not to install a wired intercom system in my next bike anymore but rather try a wireless system instead, whatever's the best option at the time.

I have the chatterbox x2 on my racing helmet... Never came off my helmet..I played around with ham operate radios in the past.. Chatterbox x2 now actually comes with a static microphone in the past they did not come with it...
I find a lot of guys uses different excuses because they don't want to pay out the money...

I would highly recommend it get the one without the Bluetooth..
That one is the best model x2......
My iPod is amazing with the chatterbox and I don't waste time plugging things in my ears...
Trust me I've been up high speeds and needed did my chatterbox or my blackout lenses come off the motorcycle...

I am extremely happy with the chatterbox...
I worked on CBs in Jacksonville Florida and the over all audio is excellent..
remember to get the x2 not the x1.....
