Dyno #'s

I had my bone stock 08 ZX14 on the dynojet today. It made 157.6 Hp but they did not show me the RPM,Air/Fuel or Torque #'s. They said it was going to cost extra to grab a coil wire because they had to raise the tank??? Any way I just wanted a base line before I put on my Muzzy M14 SS. The guy running the dyno said I need a Power Commander if I want them to remove the secondary baffles (butterfly's) is this right??? How much Hp will I gain with just Muzzy, and how much more with fly's out, and how much more with Power Commander and I guess I would order a Air Filter as well.

I see your from New Braunfels , i lived there when i was younger ..

Anyway you need a P/C if you remove the flys ..It will not gain any top end HP by removing the flys but you will pick up a of TQ down low ...But it needs to be mapped ...

With a pipe, air filter and good tune you should pick up 13 to 14 HP ..

Sounds to me they have never had a zx14 in their shop because if they had they would know that you don't raise the tank .You have to pull the tank to get the flys out but not to dyno your bike ... You can pull off one of the grills and get to the coil wire ( White With with red tracer ) You best bet is to call Johnny Cheese and have him do a custom tune ...I think He is in Austin..

New Braunsfels...beautiful country. Schliterbahn!

As close as you are to Johnney Cheese, you'd be crazy not to take advantage of it. Do it right do it once.

The dyno technician who looks after my 14 can find a coil wire to clip to without raising the tank. He can get his hand in and knows what to feel for. In any case, raising the tank takes minutes so how can they inflate the bill for that?

It might not be worth spending too much on an initial dyno reading for your baseline though. The gains you will notice most after the modifications will be in the lower rpm range where the bike will pick up useful power after removing the secondary butterflies and installing the PC. You could get around 20bhp or more at the top end but it varies from bike to bike, depends which parts you're using and on the skill of the dyno technician. The peak power won't be much different with secondary butterflies in or out, the gain will come from changing the exhaust. Also don't compare numbers from different dyno's. Just look at your baseline figure from that dyno and then see what gains you can get. A really good dyno technician can make a big difference.

Yep, the Cheese is the Man! He does all of my work for me, as it says in my "signature". My bike went from 161/99 to 181/108 with the Brock's SMEG,PCIII, and tune. Because of all the conflicting reports on whether to take the flies out or leave them in on the 08, we did our own experiment. Out is definitely better. If there is power to get out of a bike, he can find it. Give him a shout, he's a good guy that will do you right. I feel lucky I'm in his neck of the woods.

Hey Smokehouse, did you get the 161/99 before or after installing the Brocks?
I haven't had a chance to dyno mine since the install, so I really don't know where it stands.

Hey some guy, when Johnny dynoed it for the first time, it was completely stock except for a BMC filter. That of course, wouldn't make any difference. The 181/108 was after the Brocks, PCIII, and Johnny's tune. It is also a TRACK map. He could make the numbers better if I wanted a dyno queen, whick I don't. By the way, I want my old 1984 900 Ninja back! It was my first bad A street bike.

smoke............what did you learn about your experiment? ( other than it makes more down low with the flys out ) Was it a lot more? Do you have any numbers to you can share before and after? ( torque down low )

Sorry, I don't have the stats with me, they are on Johnny's computer. As for the flies, we had heard all the conflicting reports on the 08, since they open sooner. My bike felt like they opened around 4 grand. It was also quite a dog in roll-ons. Smooth as silk though around town. I had the worst time finding a nice rpm to launch at the track. Bogged or had to stay on the clutch a looong time. Flies out, it feels a bit rougher around the edges but pulls from anywhere. It's just ALL right there, if ya know what I mean. At the track it is so much nicer. It doesn't bog, just twist and try to keep the wheel down. It is very linear and predictable. Also, people at the track said the bike sounded thicker and deeper. I definitely think the gas mileage suffers, but that's not why I bought a 14. Hope this helps.

To access under the tank, simply remove the right foreman grill. Then the dyno guy can access the pulse of the coil.

Smokehouse, thanks for the response. It won't be until Spring when I can take the 14 to the west side and get a good dyno on it. Watch for my post in 6 months

BTW, you have great taste in bikes too. Was yours green? I had a bunch of extra plastics I've collected over the years so I thought I'd go green with them. Hope other members don't mind me posting pics of the 900, but it takes great pictures! It's also the Grandaddy of all Ninjas, so I'm sure they'll understand the passion.
This bike has been my restoration project for a few years now. Cosmetically, it's nearly perfect, (except for the boot crap on the left muffler). It can use new shocks both front and back. The engine is still fun and inspiring on cold mornings!

All I need is a dyno and a stock you pick the bike. You have is to be a fool not to recognize the air speed is lose the fly is expose your genitalia is showing your soldering gun plug wall socket is check his electrical bull and I should have been punching out clutch cover gaskets is searching for the holy grail is pick 3 wire hacks is gets you there without flux is swiping the sensor is make sense?

Hi there,

You can access the coil wire under the seat. Take a alen wrench and remove the tool kit. Under there on the (passenger) side of the bike is a white wire with a blue stripe. that's the lead I use for dyno runs.

Yes, you can get the flies out via prop'n the tank up, I've done it many times. I've never completely removed the tank but I guess it would allow for less angles regarding hands and screwdriver alignment.

My mods on both my 08 and 09 are M14 + M10, and M14 + Carbon. I'll post my dyno runs for you, first is the 08 ....

And now for the 08 .vs. 09 comparison ...

Dyno numbers will vary from dyno-to-dyno and also state-to-state, but I consider a +/- 5HP variance the norm.

muzzy's will give you excellent support for your system. I've dealt with Dave Turner and response has been immediate, or just a few milliseconds off.
