Countershaft Nut Woes

I went to change the countershaft sprocket today, and I can't get the nut off. I flattened the washer, and I put over 150 lbs. of torque on it...but it wouldn't budge.

So, I decided it was time to get an air compressor anyway. It came with a 1/2" impact driver that operates on 90 psi and is supposed to be capable of about 300 lbs. of torque. It won't loosen it either. I can't be sure of how much torque it is putting out, but it's enough to make the socket hard to remove.

So now I either go get a big billy-badass impact....or what??? I've never had one this difficult to remove...

Any ideas?

Shane

Just curious if you are applying the rear brake when attempting to loosen. The torque spec should only be 92 ft lbs.

Well, I think I am going to bite the bullet and get a quality impact tool tomorrow. I was hoping to get by with the included one, but I guess there is a reason it was a pack-in....

You guys are forgetting that, that nut has LocTite on it. Get a propane torch and put a little heat on it. Don't try and turn it red hot or anything. Just get it smoking a bit. This will soften the LocTite and a bit more than the specified torque should crack it loose.

I had the same problem, Shane. My impact gun wouldn't budge the nut, neither would my breaker bar. I took it to my buddies shop, he has a good gun, and zipped it off in a flat second. Do yourself a favor and get a GOOD gun and you'll have no problems.

Same here, the impact gun in our workshop wouldn't shift it. We borrowed a new one from the Snap On man and that did it.

I put a little WD-40 on mine and hit it with an impact. The first time, I did it I used a breaker bar, what a pain in the A** that was.

Is the sprocket nut a left or right hand thread?

normal, right hand thread, and as mentioned and many have found out , adding a little heat will fuck the rubber damper on the stock sproket, but will loosen the loctite.
Be sure to direct the heat at the nut, not the shaft, this will allow the nut to expand more than the shaft and make life easier.

Had the same problem using a lower end gun; could not break the nut. Purchased the Earthquake from Harbor Freight and came right off.
