Oil weight?

The dealership thought I should stay with regular oil until at least 3000 miles to let things get "set". I will be changing to Royal Purple synthetic after that. My question: I have always used the normal weight specified, what are the advantages/disadvantages with racing oils, zero weight, etc... that I see so much on here? Remember, I live in central Texas where it is quite hot most of the time, but can get cold a couple of months of the year.

I put red line synthetic 10-40 in my 12 @ 1000 miles...

Best to stick with the 10-40 and change the oil every 1000 miles, unless you put a crazy amount of miles on it every month or if your going to DragRace it...

Good ole, Castrol 10-40. GTX. At 17,000 on the 14 now. On my previous ZX11 I used Castrol 10-40 as well. Put 54,000 on that one without a hick up. New owner is still following my suggestions and has stayed with the Castrol. as well. That bike is now up over 70,000.
I change every 3000. The oil has just started to darken up by then. I only change the oil filter every other oil change. Usually cut the filter open but no signs of any cuttings etc.
Kawasaki recommended oil change periods are far higher than what I'm doing.
I scratch my head at the people who change their oil every 1000 or so AND use synthetic. Most will likely sell there bike (or write it off) long before it is in need of major engine work.
Just a waste of $ as far as I'm concerned. These are Kawasaki's, if you get past the warranty period they will likely go a 100,000 before troubles unless you are a very abusive rider/owner.

AMSOIL

But, all of the tests have shown, if you use conventional oil....., Castrol GTX is the best conventional oil........, it is what AMSOIL recomends, if you refuse to run synthetic....., it has beat several lower end synthetic oils.........

I gained ET with AMSOIL over Royal Purple, 5w30 vs 5w30, and now AMSOIL has a full on racing grade, will be testing it soon.........

BTW, you can run AMSOIL 20,000 miles in a car with no problems at all............, it has been proven

Texas State police, and Highway patrol, or whatever they are called have been using it and doing 20,000 mile oil changes for quite some time..........

Amsoil !!! Had 2000+ passes on my '00 ZX-12R with only oil, clutch, and spark plug changes. Run it in my '06 ZX-14 with over 600 passes, and I run Amsoil in all of my vehicles, lawn mowers, and generator. Good stuff!!

Exactly.

And, they are one of the only ones that make a specific synthetic oil for generators........, if you race as much as me....., changing generator oil is a pain.........

My mom goes 15,000 miles on a rural mail route........, 700 stops per day........., and gained almost 1 mpg.

Things to consider: Brocks recommends 0W oil for the 14's. Or even less than 0W for racing! I run 0W-20 synthetic right now, and I am sure I noticed an increase in seat of the pants HP on the top end, for what thats worth. "Very Little" I know... But I most definitely DID notice that with the 0W-20 I was hearing valvetrain noise I never heard before, and the cam tensioner is noticeably louder, too. Was expecting it too be louder, but not that much louder.

Little bit of info: I drive my '91 Eclipse 100+ miles every day, and I always check my mileage. Using Castrol or Pennzoil 20W-50 or 30W-50 oil my mpg was always 29-30. When I dropped in 10W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic 2000 miles ago, it immediately went to 32-33 mpg. Same gas station for nearly every refill, everything the same. 10% gain in mileage roughly equals a 10% gain in power! However, the old Mitsubishi's were notorious for low oil pressure on higher mileage engines (which is why I ran 20W-50 or 30W-50) and it now is cut in half on the gauge, not hitting the "normal" range until I'm over 3K rpms. Just a bit of info to mull over...

that is not a true apples to apples comparo...........

now get you some AMSOIL, 10w30, and you will gain over the mobil 1..........

Your gain was on weight alone........, not the grade of the oil so much........, little bit of both..........

My mothers gain on the mail route, was going from 10w30 Castrol, to 10w30 amsoil.

Last I saw, brock said no no on the 0w for the zx14s, and 0w20 was okay........

I am about to switch to the new 5w20 Dominator oil from AMSOIL, which is a specific racing oil,

The other already gained over Racing 21........, which is a 5w30, and I used regualar synthetic AMSOIL., 5w30. Now I want to see what I can do, with the next step up........

Should be my fastest passes to date when I switch........, and I am going to try for 8.99 or better when it gets a little cooler..........

I ran 5.84 in the 1/8 two weeks ago....., and found that I have a little bit left........., with a mcr, I think 5.7s are no prob, but I want to do it again on the shinko........

Rock on NOX! Good luck on those times. Come again on what Brock said? (no no on the 0W for the 14's, and 0W20 was OK) Which is it? STICKS I'm glad you chimed in. You were one of the main reasons I asked the question...I had seen you were running 0W. So running 0W won't hurt anything, it will just increase engine noise for the most part? But add mpg and power? I guess you guys are swaying me from my old favorite Royal Purple. Bad, bad posters!

its on brock davidson's web site, do not quote me......, I was just stating what I thought I remembered.......

RP is good oil.......

I made about 800 passes on it, and the bearings were great, until I put in a oil pan that would not hold up to my type of use, and started short timing hard with it......., starved the pickup, then boom........

Even good oil, must still go to the rods........

I am also going to try some more chassis adjustments......., have some tricks up my sleve.......

I've had no problems with Amsoil 10W-40. 33,000 miles so far. Changed the oil & filter every 6000 miles.
