This happened once before...
late 80's sportbikes were getting to be pretty good... the FZR1000 and the GSXR1100 were both powerful and reasonably lightweight.... I'm talking the 85-88 varieties... I had an 86 GSXR 1100 and I also owned an 87 FZR1000 ...
Then something happened... for some reason the bikes got heavier.. and bigger.... by '91 they weighed considerably more than their older counterparts, and they were spoting fashionable (not) pink and pastel colors...
(they simultaneously screwed up all the 750's....)
Are we in for a repeat of the 90's??
Anyone else remember this?

Yes I do, It took years to ever get the GSXRs back to their original weight. Kawasaki was always heavy though. That's why the 10R floored me with it's lite weight. I was so praying for Kawasaki to carry that over to the 12R. I thought that they had finally seen the light, but NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember fish..................me and the wife had matching 86 GSXR 750&1100's. Like you said by 91 those same bikes were really porked out. The wife bought a new GSXR 1000 in 2001. The 07/08 is MUCH heavier..............the only bike that compares in weight is the 04/05 ZX10. Those bikes are within 2 or 3 lbs of each other. Seems like when we get to a certain point though ( or weight ) A new model comes out and is really light. Kind of a "cycle" if you will................

Yes Fish I remember. I bought an 87 GSX-R1100 that belonged to Kiwi racer Denis Ireland. He'd used it in the North West 200 races in Northern Ireland and then took it ot the Isle Of Man TT Races for the production race. It was cancelled that year because of the wet weather and I bought the bike. It seemed incredible after my GPz900, a quantum leap in design and performance, really like a race bike.
If we are in for a repeat of that in bike evolution then that's great.
