Filled Up With 110 Octane Leaded Fuel. Am I in Trouble?
While riding my ZX-14 with a couple of friends this weekend, they stopped at a station that offered 100 and 110 octane fuel. I THINK that the 110 was leaded. Following their lead I filled up with the 110 octane. Will this harm the engine? At $9.25 a gallon I don't plan on making this a habit but wanted to "try it out". Any advice would be appreciated.

It will hurt nothing but your wallet ... it will kill some power because of the unneeded octane ..

Can you run 87 octane on the 14 without causing any problems? What are the draw backs?

I used 87 octane in my ZX11 for 54,000 and now have over 13,000 on my 14. Never been a whimper. No signs of detonation on the plugs. Don't lug the engine down (WOT @2000rpm) and you should be fine.

Actually you could wreck the spark plugs from riding at street speeds on race fuel. Seen it happen to other bikes and just happend to myself on my Busa. Was running 108 and it ruined the plugs. Bike started running like crap at anything over 8000 rpms. replaced the plugs and topped off with 92 pump gas and runs fine. If you looked at the plugs close it had lead imbedded in the electrode and a coating of it on the insulator as well and then statred miss firing.

Is this an IMMEDIATE risk or one that can happen over a few tankfulls? This is my 1st tank of the stuff. Should I drain the tank or just burn through it THIS time and never use it again?

Well it took me 2 tanks and about 225 miles to ruin my plugs. I would take my chance and top off with pump gas and run it thru. If it starts missing just replace the plugs.

You ARE in trouble......the leaded fuel will kill the catalytic exhaust. Dump the fuel.

I didn't know that the US allowed leaded fuel of any kind, it will clog your catalytic converter.

Couldn't find a siphon hose laying around (I KNOW I have one SOMEPLACE lol) so took it out for a long, fast ride and burned up all the fuel. Bike's running fine.
I don't THINK the cats in the bike are like cats in a car. Since I gutted the center pipe out of the cans, I can SEE the honeycomb wall of the rear of the cat inside the can. I used a welding rod to probe through the holes in it and found that on the other side of the "grill" is a whole lot of NOTHING!
In a car's cat, the cat is like a fine, deep, ceramic honeycomb. The cat in the bike seems NOTHING like that. Looks impossible to clog with vapors.

The problem is the leaded fuel ruins the catalytic converter chemically, it poisons it. It might not be clogged up but it will not be removing the harmful stuff from the exhaust gas any longer.
The exhaust contains a core of ceramics coated with powdered catalysts that contain metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. These are contaminated by using leaded fuel.
Do you have an exhaust emissions check in your State? The bike could fail.

Gotcha.
How do our bikes pass inspection when the exhaust is changed to a Muzzy or any other after market pipe which are all basically insulated straight pipes?

Well, it depends where you are and that's why I asked the question.
In some places something like Akrapovic pipe would fail on noise and in other places removing the Cat might not be allowed.
