Tragic, I was so relieved when my eldest daughter gave up her bike for a car and she was only riding a 125. I know that makes me a hypocrite, having had bikes since I was seventeen. Should your kid have a bike when Dad has one too? It's such a hard call to make, maybe an R1 was a bit much.

16 year old + 150 HP motorcycle?

1st and foremost a tragedy for the young man to lose his life...at 16. Not going to rip Dad because he is already paying the ultimate price...Hindsight is brutal for him as the parent who bought the R1 for a 15 year old. Did the father ride? More importantly, being 16 is about freedom and taking risks and NOT understanding the possible consequences of those risks. Lord knows it took me well into my life (45 now) to really understand the risks I have taken on bikes and in cars and how to be responsible at those risks to even.....think hard about them never mind make better decisions. Alot of us riding everyday are alot older than 16 and still don't....get it.

The truth of our sport is that death is always there lurking just outside the view every time everyone of us swings a leg on a bike, cruiser or sportbike, doesn't matter. All you need is the wrong combination of circumstances and rider inputs and the grim reaper does the rest.

Dress for the crash....not the ride....Ride Safe....

Powerful and appropiate words leovinceZX14.

Isn't their a minimum age requirment for a motorcycle license? Maybe as soon as he turned 16 his pop bought him an R1 instead of an BMW.

I remember searching for my first bike and the salesman asking me what I was currently riding. When I told him this was going to be my first bike and I was in a motorcycle class, he kindly walked me away from the CBR929RRs over to the 600s. I wasn't upset because I understood what he was doing. I actually thanked him (to his surprize).

I feel really bad for the father but part of me is angry with him because just doing a little research on what his son was getting into may have changed his mind. I also wish the salesman they had was like the one I had and would have taken the father aside and explained to him what the R1 (or any sportbike) is capable of. Sadly, they had to find out the hard way.

high speed stunts in the high school parking lot? sorry the kid didn't make it but sounds like poor judgement by father and son took his life. i'm thinking about getting a bike for my 16 year old daughter, but it would not be a litre bike. even the 600's are too smokin fast.

Knowledge is definitely your best tool, and salesmen should assist with this. Earlier this year when my wife was scheduled to take her course we went shopping for a bike for her. Unfortunately all the 250 were gone… and while there was a waiting list a little birdie told me we would be waiting until 09.

When my wife was alone on the showroom floor a new salesman came over to give her a hand and steered her to the 6R. When I cam over and said no she is a beginner rider and with young kids I want to keep her around for a few more years and said a 650R was my next choice… He told us that the 650R was a much faster bike than the 6R and was for a more “experienced rider”.

Needless to say I found another salesman and we purchased a 650, great bike and very easy to ride for a beginner.

My hart goes out to this father, I know you never want to say no to your kid’s and if he was clueless about bikes he may have said “sure we will go with the R1 now and when you get more confident you can move up to the R2”.

Truly sad.
Sad for the deceased, the parents and the sport.

irresponsiblity gives our sport a bad name.

See the very thing that makes us addicted to bikes, ultimately is the inherent hazard.

You aren't living if you don't feel life... thin line between feeling it and ending it sometimes.

I don't think any of us can mirror threads. I don't have that option and I'm sure 99% of the others don't either. That's just my correct opinion though.
