Steering head nut WAYY loose.

Just a heads up, I mentioned it once awhile back when I found it, but figured I might not be the only one so here's the official post.

Ever since owning it, I've noticed it had a weird clunking feel to it when I entered a higher lean corner, never was sure what it was. My friend (a 185 pound rider) noticed it to, but it was even more pronounced when he rode it. He said it felt like it was coming from the rear suspension to him, so we tore through the whole rearend to no avail. We also checked the frontend, everything BUT the steering head nut.

When I was installing the front springs, I noticed that the triple tree had a bit of slop in them so I grabbed the stem nut and if friggin free turned in my hand! Was never tightened from the factory I guess, it spun almost one full turn before it bit, then I gave it one half a turn past that. All I could do without the right tool.

Don't have a manual, (and my stupid email wont allow me to download it FYI), so what is the torque supposed to be? I vaguely recall in the past having to torque it, back it off and retorque it on other bikes that still the case?

Sticks- the Steering head nut torque needs to be set at 58ft-lb. If you have access to a fax machine, I would be willing to fax you that part of the manual. Be safe and tighten that thing up!

I could have sworn that the steering head nut is sitting in a different position than just a month ago.

I've also been having that clunking sound come from the front end.

Thought it was just me.

Going to check it out now!

Sticks-gotcha covered! ETA-2-5 minutes, hold up. You didn't give a name to fill in the letter head(I would hate to be informal "sticks") . I realize this board is public so only give me your fist or a nick name you go by and the co-workers know who should get this.

Now question: when I hook the torque wrench to the spanner, do I have to do the math to "equal" the torque, or are those numbers already taking that into account?

Spanner wrenches have a square slot in there ends for a torque wrench. Problem is, when you apply torque at the end of a 6" spanner wrench, the torque reading on the wrench will be off. ALOT. So there is math you can do, that I would have to look up (been awhile), to convert the indicated/dialed amount on the torque wrench to what torque is actually being applied on teh spanner nut. You apply 58 ft. lbs. thru a 6" spanner wrench, you are actually applying probably ?120 ft. lbs? to the nut. It's all about leverage.

Seems like you would just take 6" (spanner Length) / Torque Wrench Length (in inches) to find out what percentage you are adding to the torque wrench reading. Add that to the 100% you would be getting without the extra inches and divide desired torque by that.

wtf, that sounds really confusing. How bout an example:
Say your torque wrench is 24" long
6" / 24" = .25
So your effective lever length is 125% of what the scale on the torque wrench is calibrated for.
58 / 1.25 = 46.4
So when your 24" torque wrench is set for 46.4 ft/lb you will actually be applying 58ft/lb since your lever length is 1.25 times what it would be without the spanner? That is what makes sense to me, don't know if it is right or not.

Might just do the "grunt grunt final shove" guesstimate approach.
