I used 87 in my ZX11 for 54,000 no prob. Kept right on with the 14 and now have 12,000 on it. No prob.

Premium is 5.00 or more per gallon in spots here in san diego. That being said, my bike has been averaging 41mpg going back and forth to work, so I still pay about half what I was in my car. I'll just run the super at 20 cents more per gallon. That's less than a dollar per fill up. I could probably use 1 less soda per week anyway.

I just went on a 450 mile ride last weekend...(in one day) Who cant afford $20 for a tank of gas??? I paid $4.79 for premium highest and felt lucky to pay $4.25. It was the best spent hundred I can think of ?? twist the throttle and be glad.someday they'll make us all ride the bus. I agree with sell the bike if you cant afford $20 bucks.

I'd agree with the post about ethanol being shit -- I've noticed that on my bikes as well, especially on my ZX -- pulls like shit with that crap in the gas. If I want my ZX running on corn...I'll add it myself. :d

I always hit the "93" button. I ususally end up put in 3-4 gallons at a stop which ends up being only $.60 - $.80 extra over the 87.

Nice to know those perfomance figures are all in your head.....Gas is REQUIRED by federal law to have an ethanol content of at least 5%....it may be 10% IIRC>

I have to agree with the majority of the posts in here and simply say that with the significant investment you make with an expensive bike like the 14, plus the thousands of dollars in upgrades you are inevitably going to put into it, paying an extra $1.30 at the pump per refill should not make much of a difference at all. You might notice a expense when filling a car or a truck that has a large gas tank but not the small tank of a bike. It is always the best stuff for my most valued investments and it should not be a real issue for you. Remember you can always ride it like a grandma with a broken hip also if you want to really improve your mileage.

Riding like a grandma won't get you better gas mileage. Bone stock, this bike gets it's best mileage at 80mph on the highway. That's what I saw on my trip anyway.

I was using 87 in the hot weather and got a lot pinging when the motor lugged down off a light and such....I mentioned it to Brock via e-mail when we were chatting and was advised to bump the octane up until the pinging went away ASAP...

As far as I know the ethanol requirement never was passed, it was simply a recommendation and came with a tax break for the refineries - which is the same as a requirement if the gas companies save more money by using it. Which has been the case. In Washington State, they had a few counties where the state required them to use ethanol on a "trial" basis, it was scrapped after a couple years. Ended up not mattering, the gas companies all went to different levels of ethanol content anyways.
The test me and my brother performed were when it was only those two counties that had ethanol, now its a moot point I guess. It would explain part of the reason race gas gets such better HP numbers though... Remember the good ole days when you could get 101 octane leaded gas at the pump? Last of those I saw went away in the late eighties in California. Last 98 octane unleaded pump went away in Washington around the year 2001.

Not in Canada Eh… Almost all major filing stations in Canada now have 5% ethanol… But if you want to go to Jimmy Butts Filing station he aint got no ethanol in his gas (only water).

I'll be the third person in this thread to chime in about OCTANE.
Octane itself is a combustion INHIBITOR, meaning the higher the octane the more it takes to get it to burn. The lower the octane the easier it is to combust. Hence, 87 makes more power than 92, not considering other factors.
High performance cars need high octane fuel to keep the mixture from detonating too early. Some cars have knock sensors that can adjust the timing to compensate for using lower octane fuel. Our Zx-14's do not have this timing/ knock sensor. thats why the factory recommends 91.
In hot summer days you can not get away with using 87, so 91 it is for me in Az. where it gets 114 degrees.
In winter you can get away with using lower octane, less detonation so lower octane is needed.
If you bog the motor down around 2k rpm you'll need 89+.
There are many factors that determine what octane fuel you can use.
The rule of thumb is try 87 and if you knock or detonate then move up one octane rating to like 89, If you knock there, go to 91/92.

On the octane question, I was always told that higher octane burned a bit slower, too. Which is why low octane heads utilize "quick burn" type combustion chambers to take advantage of that initial high pressure piston-near-top-dead-center bang while not relying on the continueing pressure after TDC as much as they would with a high octane head design.
GM has been working under that assumption for quite a few years now, which is why there "quick burn" combustion chamber head designs are such great street car heads but aren't used on full race cars. They have a completely different chamber shape for those, and are very adament that they only be used in a high compression/ high octane engine. Question is: where does the 14 head fit into that either/or equation? I'm betting its on the low octane/ quick burn side.

where is it written that you got a nice bike .. and more spensive gas is any better ??
almost ALL of you putting more than 87 are doing it blindly because you have some notion from your gandpa that it is better .. or cleaner .. or some damn thing .. your proliferating the lies .. nothing more ...
read the truth as posted about OCTANE !!! not cleaner .. not less harmfull to the little birdies ..
actual facts regarding octane .. so why .. after reading ( you did read right ? ) do you still prefer to spend money you don't need to .. let your ego rest .. polish your ride again .. and let my double-double go ! ( that was for those who know )
