Chain skipping on sprocket? Possible?

First ride yesterday after putting on rear vortex sprocket. Was going in 4th to redline then left off and the chain felt like it was skipping teeth. I had checked chain tension before riding seemed good. Anyway I adjusted it some more and kept riding. I was a little easier on it the rest of the ride and the bike seemed ok. Could it be the tranny? It was not electrical in nature (as in a miss or something)

Hi there,

I've had chain skipping issues on my Ducati in the past. I could feel it more under acceleration rather than what you described. for me it felt like bad fuel or sputtering or sorts.

Since your rear sprocket is fairly new, you should still be able to feel the sharpness of the teeth. Put your bike on a rearstand (or roll it) and feel the tips of each tooth. They should feel new-ish and freshly ground/cut.

Did you install the sprocket and tire yourself?
Are you sure the chain wasn't too tight?
What gearing did you go too?
Stock chain length?
Is the tire properly lined up?
Did the sprocket nuts get torqued correctly?
Did you get a good seat on the mating surface to the rim? The loc-tite they use can be an issue.
Have you messed with the front sprocket at all?
Make damn sure you tighten up the rear swingarm bolts(two nuts that tighten against each other once you get the wheel alingned).

My partners gixxer 750 was doing the same thing. It wound up being loose bolts on the right side chain adjustment. He asked me to look at it and I actually overtightened the chain(I thought he had his full weight on the bike when I adjusted it).
So with that said, a un-aligned(sp?) rear tire can give you this, or an overtightened chain. Make sure you keep the chain/sprocket lubed too.

Surely its something simple. g/L

this might be a stupid question, but since i dont know, how could the chain being too tight make it feel like that? i have always been on the nervous side of thinking the chain is too tihgt/not tight enough...

I asked myself the same thing, not sure why. I didn't ride it, i just tightened it up for him in the parking lot so he could get back to his mechanic. He asked me to look at it, and the right side chain adjustment was loose. I aligned it and tightened it up with him sitting on the bike... His mechanic said I overtightened the chain. The bike was still making the same noise as before, but not as loud. Once he got it to the shop, they adjusted it, lubed it and it was just fine after that.

I guess I should say it was making the same sound as before I tightened the chain.

Either way, a properly adjusted/ lubed chain will cure a lot.

Its a 2007 with 5500 hard miles. I change the oil every 2000 with amsoil synthetic but I do run her hard. I am used to my 1397 busa and my gixxer 1000 so I do lots of wheelies and such. This is my first kawi so I hope its nothing. I beat the shit out of the busa and gixxer and never had one problem. Good thing is its under warranty for another month and my dealership owns the bike shop where I bought it. And by beat to shit I do not abuse the machine, just meaning that I run it to redline, hit the twisties hard, ride in the rain, ect. I know the 14 is not a liter bike but I think it is capable of doing the same type of riding in a more comortable manner. I cant be any harder on the bike then guys going to the strip on the weekend.
