Front springs wont come out
Replacing my springs with a different weight, decided me and my friend could do it this time instead of the dealer... Guess not. Never seen a fork setup like the 14's. Got the caps unscrewed, but they are attached to the whole mess by a long skinny thing that apparently runs all the way thru the fork to the bottom. Cant get the cap off the spacer, but can pull up on it all far enough to touch the spring. (which sucks up the forks when I yank on the caps). Got the schematics, but it doesnt help on bit. Any one here had a fork like that apart before?
The directions that came with the springs just say "take the cap off, and the shims and spacer, then replace the springs with the new ones and reassemble"..... Yeah, that helps. Even Racetec hasnt had the 14 forks apart yet apparently! Never had a problem replacing spring before on my other bikes. HELP!

Do you have the manual? I removed my forks to save some labor. I don't have any of the special tools, so I dropped them off at the shop. I don't believe these are any more complicated than other forks out there.

Yeah lietoome, they most definitely are different. A cross between a cartridge style fork and who know what, based upon a upside down fork configuration. Me and my friend have combined done at least 20 different fork spring replacements on every make and model of sport bike. Never seen this type. Now I have to find a manual I guess...

I remember tool man mentioning he serviced or changed his front fork stuff - you might try PMing him
dayum, I had a soft copy ZX14 service manual but deleted it off my puter when I sold the bike. many around here have it if you ask

Looks like you need a spring compressor tool to expose a nut on the inner piston rod as outlined in the manual section 13-13 or page 480-481. Maybe you could improvise but it looks pretty tight. Might have to take the forks to a shop.

That is exactly correct.
With mx forks we usually fight our way past the spring, depending on model jam a wrench between the coils, or compress springs manually by hand to get at jam nut, but streetbikes usually are too stiff, so spring compression tool becomes requirement

thanks for the info fellas. I'm gonna order the spring compression tool. I'm now into the "I WILL do it myself even if it kills me!" stage.
Of course, I could just take it to the shop and let them do it in one and a half hours labor charge like the first time.... lol

Those tools will cost you about $200 if I recall correct...
they list the part #'s in the service manual if you get your hands on one
edit tool part #'s listed...
they will work on most any kayaba fork and most showa too, so it will be a tool to keep for life...
not really a waste of money, or single use , so good money spent if you are likeme....
"DO -OR -DESTROY" (trying) LOL

My friend is getting ready to start up his own shop, so if they cost that much I'm gonna work something out with him. He said there is a generic tool that is only $20, too, but I might just kick in part of the $$ for the OEM recommended part. We'll see.
