ZX 14 valve adjustment
Is there anything I should know other than whats in the shop manual for adjusting valves? Tricks, things that can go wrong.

No tricks ......... Just take your time and don't rush ....Mostlikey they will be in spec or at the worst you will need to change one or two shims ... I have seen them with 15000 miles that needed no shiming ..

before you take the cams out for shim swaps scratch marks on the timing chain and sprockets to get them back exactly the way they came out per the service manual.if not those little valves will be ratta tat tatting on the tops of the slugs...have funnnnnnnnnnnn.

I wouldn't scratch anything that is a rotating object in the engine, could give a stress point for possible failure. I would recommend clean off the oil from the chain link or area to be marked and use a paint pen or a sharpie and put a small mark on it that way. It would be nice to take a poll of 14 owners to see how many have checked their valves for adjustment and how many really needed to make any adjustments.

I think HiMile did valve adjustments a couple times an did find a few that needed shimming at 15,000 miles.

a scratch on a timing gear is not going to hurt anything. And it wont wipe off when you are cleaning everything up to reassemble, either. Trust me! Don't be stupid and put the mark on a mating or bearing surface though. Just toss it above the tooth in question.

I have 20,000 miles on mine and I dragrace, dealer wants $300.00 for the job. Should I wait until I get more miles. Don'nt mind spending the money, but if its not broke don'nt fix it.

At 20,000 miles, personally I would spend the $$ and get it done. It is a preventive maintenance rather than a "if it ain't broke" issue.

I'll do the valves myself at 12000. The Kaw salesman who races a 600 at Miller Raceway has a Harley Mechanic do all his setup and fine tuning. The best mechanic for a brand bike doesn't always work for that dealer.

if possible, before you take the CCT off rotate the motor to TDC on #1, then tie wrap the chain tp the int and exh sprockets.

12MARK you said put "scratch marks on the timing chain and sprockets to get them back exactly the way they came out per the service manual" I guess you didn't read the manual because there is this easy photo and cam gears already have marks on them.

Were you talking about your cranium? "it's harden fucking steel" Anyway stick to John Deere work

i guarantee you i can get it timed faster and back together CORRECTLY faster using the mark it method.
that pic dose not even show the lines stamped on the cam sprockets.
while your counting pins i'll be tightening the valve cover bolts.but that way is fine.it still accomplices the same procedure.

At 10K mine all checked close to the middle or tighter end of the range.........good for another 10K.
I had the valve cover off to stop the leak...so why not check 'em?.........
