No Flies Vs. MPG

First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm a new 14 owner out of San Diego. I went home on leave to texas, and ended up buying an 07 Special edition while i was there. A week later i was deployed lol. I'm currently sitting on a ship in south america wishing that i was able to ride :P lol. I know that a lot of people are pulling the secondaries on their bikes, but how bad does that kill your gas mileage. I am definitely looking for performance on any mods that i do to my bike, but will still be riding it every day to and from work. Sorry to be "that guy" that just kind of shows up with a bunch of questions.

Thanks for the help

Doesn't affect the MPG at all. Unless of corse you hammer the throttle more! Just be sure to add a Power Commander with a no flies map to add fuel down low to go with the increased airflow. Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the quick reply... Also, does it make it any harder to get out of the hole on? A lot of people bitch and complain about the 14 not having any bottom end, but i have no problems launching with the flies in. If anything i could imagine it being a little harder to get traction with them out, making it harder to launch. Am i completely wrong here? Also, who would you reccomend going to for a PC3 with a good removed flies map? I know that the guys over at HPC sell one. Any suggestions from you guys?

OK in order here: "does it make it any harder to get out of the hole on?" You couldnt be any farther from the truth there. It gives you great throttle response and a large jump in linear power down low. You launch at a few grand lower on the tack with better 60' times. Plus's all around. "harder to get traction with them out" should not be an issue, besides a little tire spin is good for your launch. Look up Smokin's how-to-launch video for the exactly proper way to do a flies out launch.
"would you reccomend...good removed flies map? I know that the guys over at HPC sell one" Well, if you dont have a PC III yet, go straight to Brocks (on the front page of here, he's a site sponsor- and a good guy who posts here when he can), and order one from him. It will come with a very good flies out map that will be within a horse or two of perfect. (I've been told, though each bike is a bit different). Maybe someone whose used HPC's map can input here, but from what I've seen everyone either uses Brocks map or there own custom map. The type of exhaust, and stock, aftermarket, or no aircleaner and any other powerplant mods will all weigh into what map you use, though if the loss of a couple HP dont bother you, then save your money and go with a generic map.

A few guys here have maps they will no doubt give you if you ask, just do a search for "maps" and you'll find the guys. Then send them a PM.

I myself am using a custom map from somebody else's bike with flies out, and will need to get one myself this summer from them so I can dyno both, compare it to the shops custom map, and post the results for no other reason than to start yet another "dyno" thread...

Thanks for the insight. I am no doubt ready to get back in late may and take the trip back to Texas to get my bike. My dad has been messing up the 600's at the strip on his M109R so far this year lol. That's a pretty decent running cruiser. Bone stock it's turning 7.50's at around 95 mph in the 1/8th with a 1.7 60ft time. It would be nice if we had a 1/4 mile track like everyone else, but the closest ones we have are Ennis Tx, or Thunder Valley in OKC.
Hopefully i can talk the wifey into letting me drop the money for a PC3 before i go back on leave so that i can pull the flies.

Oh yeah, does anyone here have a stock windscreen that they would be willing to let go cheap? When i bought my bike used it had an UBER tall screen on it that makes it look like a damn touring bike lol. It's going to be great on my trip, but i hate the look of it.

My friend and I have new 07 all stock zx14's and we just installed power commanders and pulled the flys out yesterday. We are using the stock exhaust, stock air filter, no secondaries map provided from dyno jets web site. Tonight we rode around with some buddies and we both reset our average fuel economy gauges. The results were about a 2 mpg increase in fuel economy on both bikes. I was pretty consistantly getting about 33 to 34.5 mpg completely stock every time I would reset my average mpg. After tonights ride I had 36.2 average. The ride tonight consisted of a 50/50 mix of city driving and highway, and of course a little playing around. I would also like to say that I am very happy with how the bike runs now with the flys out. The snap in the lower revs is awsome, and for me the power is still easy to control in slow speed manuvering and turning.

I pulled the flies on mine. put a scorpion ti oval on it saw am getting about 5 mpg better fuel economy. the throttle response is excellent. I am in colorado at about 5200 feet so it made total sense being up here more air is a good thing. Now i can only imagine what it would run like a sea level.
