Help: Whats The Best Air Filter for the Street?

Getting ready to buy a filter, and want the best flowing setup possible. Whats the best out there fellas? And what mods should I do to the filter/ airbox if any?

Also, until I buy it, is there any mods I can do to the stock one that actually work? I heard about removing the mesh screen off the bottom to help airflow. Is it safe?

If it matters, I also ride in the rain. Don't know if that moisture would hit the filter element and weaken it, making the no screen mod a bad choice (sucking it into engine could be a possibility I would imagine). Thanks fellas!

Sticks, I bought a BMC from performance products out of smokey point..Looks to be really nice quailty but haven't installed it yet..They make two versions of it race and street form what people say there's very little differnce..But the race one does offer slightly better air flow just needs cleaning more often..And it's a big improvement over stock..

Any dyno info out there? Being the nutcase I am, if there is two versions of BMC, I'll take the race one and just clean it more often. Is it like a K & N? I have a few cleaning and oiling kits for those. I'm just hoping someone in the drag circuit can give me some input. Like improved power, higher powerband, etc... or even time improvements.

If all else fails, I'll just ask Brock. But no matter how great a guy and racer he is, he's also a business man who will promote his sponsors/products.

Sorry sticks, Dont have any performance data..But i do remember someone on here did a few months back and thats one reason i bought the BMC over the K&N and i do know you can use the same cleaning and revive kit..Because i am in the same boat also having a collection of K&N cleaning kits from my truck and Motorhome..And the K&N was a very mild differnce from stock Where BMC "Race" out flowed them all..

Smokin picked up a TENTH!!!! off et with the BMC if I am not mistaken. Same gain as with no filter... There is a thread over in the ZX14 forum on psychobike.com about an airbox mod for the ZX14 it is basically about sealing the airbix completely good read!!

Just read a forum post on PNWRiders.com that said the BMC race is simply a street filter with the screen removed. Anyone know this to be true?

Funny then why do they look differn't..You can see the race version is easyier to see light thru so there for thinner..I looked at both when i was at performace and the race unit has less fiber than street..

I had Ryan Schnitz dyno test the following filter choices last fall:
new stock filter
new stock filter with the back plate removed
pipercross race filter
BMC race filter
no air filter
All the dyno testing was done the same day and the A/F ratio was retuned to the same standard for each choice. The BMC race filter made the most HP & TQ of any of the filters tested. The BMC outperformed the Pipercross followed by the stock filter with the back plate removed and then the stock filter. No filter provided the best HP over the BMC by a small margin (less than 1 HP at all RPM levels). The test bike was my 06 ZX-14 with Brock's street oval system and a power commander (fairly typical mods). The following list is for the dyno run times from 3300 RPM to 10,700 RPM for each filter choice.
no filter---8.47 seconds
BMC race filter---8.49 seconds
Pipercross race filter---8.54 seconds
new stock filter no back plate---8.55 seconds
new stock filter---8.58 seconds
Hope this helps

WoW now thats a complete, unequivecable answer!! Thanks to all who responded, especially Johns. Nothing beats numbers! I would also bet the street BMC falls between the BMC Race and Pipercross. Guess since I dont ride on dusty roads etc... I'll just order the BMC Race.

Gotta give it up for Bikeland and its Members!

I picked up the BMC street because I didnt want to clean as often as the race requires, and it is still a big improvement over stock. Also a safety factor for the engine, who knows when you might run into a little dust or dirt in the air here or there... I want the best protection for the engine if that happens, and the street filter will catch more of that stuff than the race filter would.

Negative: the race has the same micron rating as the street.. Just need to clean it more often..And often is only every 20 thousand miles..Depending on the area riden..

The BMC race has 4 layers of filtering material and the street has 6. The K&N also has 6

Hell, rubbers only give you one layer of protection, so I'm confident 4 will protect my engine.

No one answered my question, though: Is brocks filter that they sell a Race or Street?

Sticks, when i ordered my filter i was told all the ones shipped to the states are Race and that if i wanted street i had to place a special order..Don't know if that helps..But that was my case..
