Elevation robs Horsepower BIG TIME!

Here's the story, I live in Southern AZ and the elevation here is pretty high (4500ft avg but ranges from 4200 on up to around 5300 in some places). I put my muzzy full Ti/Ti pipe as soon as the pipe got released. I also put on a PC3 as soon as those got released. I deployed to Iraq, blah, blah, blah and now that I've been back for a few months I've added a BMC filter. I finally had a chace to get my bike to a dyno shop in Tucson. Its was a little mom and pop shop that specializes in ATVs (great service at Racers Edge) but they said they would help me out for cheap. It wouldn't be worth it to drive to Phoenix to get to a proper shop only to gain 1/2hp and spend about $300. One hour of my time, $60 and I gained almost 5hp and 3lb/ft. I figured with the elevation I would lose about 10% power and tourque. I guessed I would come in around 160hp and leave around 165hp. I was damn near dead on. Here are the numbers, I'll post a scan of the print out later today.

Before:
159hp
95lb/ft

After:
164hp @ 9888
98lb/ft @ 7750

Mods: Muzzy full Ti/Ti, BMC filter, PC3

Factoring in the elevation (2750ft) at the dyno site I figure I am putting about 180/185hp and 106/108lb/ft to the wheel at sea level.

About $1800 in mods and I am putting out stock power!!! I can't wait to change duty stations again.

What do you guys think?

It should be more like 177 hp at sea level all things being eqaul, Same dyno,etc.. I struggle with this on a guys pikes peak qaud. Until this season he's been running a highly modified 660 raptor thats carborated, and pike offers drastic elevation changes. Using this formula you should see about 10-12 hp diviation.... Bill...

What formula do you use to factor to sea level? I was just guessing 10% loss due to the elevation. I could be wrong because I didn't get a chance to look up any correction factors online.

I did look up the 1/4 mile correction factors from the NHRA website. The track here in Tucson (3075ft) I've run a best of 10.55@136mph. Corrected thats something like 10.1@141mph. Thats not bad for stock wheel base, my mods and me weighing about 245lbs suited.

Dont worry about the HP loss and lower elapsed times 200, all that matters is the guy next to you has the same problems, and you just smoked him.

The easiest way is to go to brock's site and i think its the diaries he talks about the correction factor! I use the Aarc, sniffer,Its exspensive but worth every penny and it doesn't use a preset % it takes all factors such as humidity, wind temp, temp and pressure. If you have more than one bike for racing or run at alot of differant tracks invest in one. If not most tracks have posted conditions you can correct to.. Bill....

200 hp. -- Welcome home. You're experiencing the effects of density altitude which one becomes quite familliar with once they obtain a pilot's license. As a non-turbo airplane climbs in altitude he loses power and as the temperature gets higher the effects are even worst for an airplane engine. Pilot are taught never to take off at a high altitude runway where the temperature is hot-- like in the middle of a summer day. You might not make it off the ground. You learn to take off in the early morning or early evening.

There is no need to modify the 14 engine for higher altitudes. It does it automatically. If you want max power take out the air filter and change the gearing.

At Bonneville I ran195.1 mph, stock engine, at a density altitude of 6,700 ft. with a power lost of 12-15%. I always wonder what that speed would be at sea level. And thanks for serving our country.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

I know my bike is down on HP just like every other bike out here. I made this post not really to complain but just to point out some facts now that I actually have a dyno to prove what I already knew. I know the bike is still strong as hell cause I ran it up to an indicated 191mph twice now and it hit the limiter but still had plenty left in it. Maybe was at 10/10.5k rpm when I did it. I might have been doing 175mph or so actual ground speed. I have no doubts that the bike is strong, just kinda upset to prove what I already knew.

If not wrong, for each 100 mt above 1.000 mt, you loose 1% of power. Metric here in Chile, so you better use a conversor for ft.
Welcome back.
