Gears. Gears. Gears!!!
Hey thanks dubious! Thanks 02zx12rbob. I appreciate both your responses.
Okay, check this out, guys. I live on a small island called Kauai in Hawaii. Most people drive pretty damn slow. Maybe 50mph to 60mph between towns. At that rate, I can hardly get into 6th gear. I'm thinking about changing sprockets.
Can someone please explain the difference between different sprocket combinations? For instance: Someone once told me that one down on the front sprocket is like three up in the rear. So, is it better to go one down on the front rather than three up on the rear? What's the difference? Why not just go five or six up on the rear? And if I do go one down and three up, will I have to change my chain? I'm serious, I need to know these things.
Well, in Hawaii, we usually say Aloha. It means, "Hello, Goodbye, Best wishes" etc. So Aloha everyone. Be patient with me, I just got my bike and am new to this. I rode before but nothing like this. And nothing this new either. I just love my zx. I just wish we had more open road on this rock.

Aloha DC!! Welcome to the board --
It's quite simple actually. The stock gearing is 17 teeth in front and 41 teeth in the rear (if I remember correctly). When you go down in the front and /or up in the rear, you're demanding more revs to gain the same rear wheel speed as stock -- and that lands you more in the engine powerband more of the time. As you go higher up the RPM band, the bike gets nearer to its peak TQ/HP. If you down to 16 teeth in the front, you need about 6.5% more revs to get to the same rear wheel speed, same as going up about 2-3 teeth in the rear. If you go to 16/43, you need about 12-13% more revs to get to the stock rear wheel speed. This means way response and a more violent launch. The net result of that change is way more perceived power at the lower end of the RPM's and less top speed. Where you are, this would be a great improvement, but watch that front wheel, because it comes up really fast after this mod. I did exactly that mod and bang for the buck, it's only topped by removing the flies. Both are better -- much!

In Hawaii, the Hawaiians say, "Mahalo" for thank you. Mahalo Steve! You were very helpful. So now, what's this about removing the flies? Better bang for the buck? I think you should tell me about this. Is it difficult to do? Does it require a plasma cutter, mig welder etc? Will I need to change my mapping? Does it effect cold starts (not that it matters in Hawaii. Ha!) etc? Anyway, thanks for all your help. Looking forward to your response.

Oh, hey, Stevewfl! I went to your my space and thanks, now I have a head ache! The video clip was too hilarious! I haven't laughed like that in a long, long time. I had to play it twice because the first time my eyes were too teared up to see anything. Too much! Can't wait to show it to my girl friend. Thanks a lot. Now I need some asprin for my headache! Ha!
