ZX-12 cam chain tensioner?

I hear Carpenter uses a modified zx12 cam chain tensioner on all the 14's they do. does anyone know what's different about the 12's tensioner?

the one carpenter uses is a stock zx12 automatic tensioner modified to fit the 14. it requires no adjustment just like the one on our 14's but there must be a reason they use a 12 tensioner. I've been told they use it all 14 engines, even ones with a large shot of nos. i don't want to use the manual tensioner unless i have to.

The 12 tensioner is stronger internaly and it wont back up like the 14 tensioner will. When you shift at wot the cam chain has a tendency to whip and it pushes hard on tensioner and can jump timeing. The 14 s are so loose the chain is noisey on cold start up,until oil psi hits it. Another advantage is the 12 tensioner wont let the guide back off when cold so the noise on cold start up is gone. I posted a yr ago on another site that we were doing this to quiet cold start cam chain noise an got roasted for it, Hub on another site told me to keep thinking but my theory was wrong, but i new it worked for us! Now your telling me bob is using them? It does work an you dont have to worry about your customers forgeting to check the manual adjt. every 2nd oil change.

Curious Bill -- why would Kawasaki build a new bike with an inferior cam chain tensioner? Is there something else it fixes, that the 12's tensioner didn't?

Fastest busa, thats a good question. It looks like kaw did let this one get away from them.It looks to be in how the 12s locking rod holds better If you look at them both you will see that the teeth an lock arm are quite different.I wish i had a better answer as to why but one of you guys will figure it out. One thing im sure of it works very well. My 06 has been running one with not one other problem! I will send pm to all with ?s when i close tonight. I stumbled across it when i had both motors apart and the 14 was one really noisey at start up. Got me looking at the adj, and just tryed it. I had seen some 14s come in with chain guides with premature wear wright behind adjuster. bill...

I will answer all pms when i get some pictures to send.should make it real simple theres realy not much to do it. Only problem is i dont have any more 12 tensioners. I sold them all when some one posted about using them. Also its cheaper to buy used tens. then to buy oem parts to mod them or it was. I should have one tomorrow too lay out along side 14s to illustrate. If you lay them both out on work bench its almost self explanitory? Bill...PS if any body wants send me both 14 and 12 tens. and i will mod them for free but shippings on you!

SEE what did i tell you guys, when i posted this before i got nothing but a rash of shit about it, If i was trying to make a buck why would i offer to do them free if you get the 12 ten, and send it to me. If you read my last post i offersd to do that. I was trying to get good pictures to post here for all to see where the mod needs to be done. The 12 ten are getting harder to fined reasonably priced. bill..

Yes thats pretty much what it takes to make it fit is what your after, There's two ways to do it but lay them both out and you can see what needs to be done and where! I was going to post pictures when i get another 12 ten in but because i have sold them all and used ones are getting hard to find locally i cant post the way i wanted too. If you read here and on another forum iam hearing crap about it already as i said before i would do them for FREE! but its so easy to do if your careful its nothing to it and you will see how well they work. Theres a guy on one site thats having one done on his bike i will post if its finished before i can post some info and pictures bill...
