Hardly 8 or 9 minutes. Gotta lift the gas tank, remove the tool tray, disconnect the ECU, remove the transistor and tail light assembly. Then you can remove the rear fender. All that stuff under your seat has to get disconnected first. Then you can remove the fender. I'm doing mine to remove the rear sub-frame for powder coating. Just going off the shop manual.

Hmmm, lets see. I removed the stock fender on my 14 Saturday night to install a Muzzy fender eliminator. You don't need to disconnect anything but the light for the plate, (small 2 wire connector under the seat)
1. remove the seat (use the key)
2. open the tool kit, take out the tools, unscrew the 4 bolts holding the tool box to the bike and remove it (you will need to remove the small module that is attached to a bracket on the tool box, use a straight blade screwdriver to unlip it)
3. lift the ECU out of the tail section and move it over to the left side of the bike (it sits on one or two metal brackets with rubber mounts, pulls staight up)
4. undo the 3 nuts that hold the fender assembly to the bike, the front two have captive bolts, the rear requires you to reach under the fender and hold the head of the bolt.
5. unplug the license plate light and feed the wire through the hole.
That's it. mount your fender eliminator of choice (follow the companies instructions) and then replace what you moved out of the way. Don't disconnect the ECU or remove the gas tank unless you have an overwhelming desire to make a 10 minute job much more complicated than it is.

Aren't the bolts securing the tool tray fitted with tamper proof nuts? Seem to remember I had a job removing them, used a pair of grips in the end.

Shop manual calls the license plate holder the license plate holder. The fender is what the license plate holder is attached to. A hugger isn't a fender either, its a hugger.
.
The question referred to the "fender", not the license plate holder. I know its hard for people that can't read a shop manual but the fender did require the gas tank to be detached and raised to be removed. That big piece of plastic under your seat with all the electronics and tools attached, that sits right above your rear wheel (or hugger) is the fender.
.
And yes the license plate mount is very easily detachable in under 8 minutes. Tack on a few more hours to remove the fender and rear sub-frame.
