May have jumped Gun on Flys out
I think I may have jumped a little early on taking my flys out. Last night I was riding with my wonderfully awesome girlfriend on board. When we got back to the house I looked down and realized my bike was running extremely hot. The whole meter was filled all the way up. Has never run that hot before. Also was giving off the smell of hot metal. Now I have not replaced the exhaust or put a pcIII in yet. But I did take the flys out about a week ago. Does this have something to do with how hot the bike is running now? Will a new exhaust and a pcIII fix this? Am I causing any real damage by running without these? HELP!!! Thanx guys.

The only problem may be running without the PCiii there is a lot of discussion but most agree it causes an undesirable lean condition but I havnt actually heard of anyone damaging their bikes

I ran mine for a long time that way and never had a problem. The bikes just seem to run hotter, at least that's what the gauge says. Mine has been to the top mark several times and still has not spit any fluid. In slow riding it always shows 3 to 4 bars.

More air equals leaner condition, which equals hotter temperatures.
Needs more fuel via a custom map/power commander.
Flies out + custom map = smile from ear to ear.

Well, now the question of the year. Which first? The exhaust? or the pc? I figured exhaust might help the temp problem a little also, because of less back pressure. More air in needs more air out. But then again the lean problem seems to pose a bigger threat. And both at once is out of the question seeing how we are talking about $1500 here.

it depends how much u want to spend. do u want slip on or full system, or what brand exhaust, it varies on price.
if u don't want spend alot of money the best way is just get a pc3 and map it for the stock exhaust no flies, that should cost u a little over 300 dollars then later on u can get rid of those huge factory things and map the same pc for after market exhaust.
good luck.

Map it (pcusb) first if you are concerned about your smoldering hot lean condition...it will only be worse with an exhaust....

I've run the bike with stock exhaust, flies out, and a PCIII. It's a blast man, more than enough bike for most people.
You should be happy to hear the PCIII will add a lot of power all the way across the power band!! The stock map is too rich so proper mapping will help your lean problem and add 6-7 hp at the top end from what I understand. You can always add the exhaust later for another 7hp or so, and a lot of weight reduction.
Until you get your PCIII, just try to keep your RPM over 5,500 most of the time. I think that should keep the temp down.

Yes leaning out the map on the top end will give you some dyno power. However, after reading some other information, I'm not so convinced that leaning out on top would give you real world dynamic street performance. That extra fuel up top is probably to compensate for ram air at speed..

I know on my trans am the word was the ram air didn't do much until at least 120 mph, and I'm sure I heard something similar on the ZX-14. If so, leaning out the bike a bit would be helpful for most people.

ECU compensate's for thr Ram-Air at speed utilizing sensors.
KHI adds fuel up top as a "Cushion". Keeps the hit soft as you approach the limiter.

truthfully I had planned on selling the ZX14 after a year so I haven't cared much to do anything except the gen3 and PCIII - and pulled the front reflectors off which was overboard!
but you know what, I've had the bike a year now and I can't imagine parting with it. and thats not like me about any product. I came close to selling it for an R1. Thank God I didn't. Rossi is even slow on the new Yami, so I couldn't even keep up with traffic on it!
